We're moving from a city located in the Norwegian fjords, with easy access to the water to go fishing, and woods/mountains to go hiking. In the 7 years I've lived here I have been 0 times in a boat in the fjord, and 4-5 times walking in the woods (only 1 time after having kids).

So, no discussion on which place has most 'nature beauty' (although I agree that plains aren't 'ugly'), but completely individual what people prioritize. If that type of outdoors is very important for someone, and they still get on this forum asking about DFW, then they need a reality-check.

I will miss glancing over the fjord as I drive home from work, though Will not miss the cranky home-sick wife that comes with it See - priorities!

You should take a family walk in the woods before you leave

Doubt it, right now it's either ski trails if high enough altitude, and the rest is melted ski trails so pretty much just cold and wet. That's another thing, you have to have a pretty high tolerance for weather types in order to enjoy it up here in these parts.

Well, go skiing then! Because here it is going to be 11-14 hour drive to get to the slopes ...

I love it! I can take my saved living-cost dollars and spend that on an annual ski trip! :-)

Negative. I drive to ski several times per year.

From Inwood and Royal in Dallas driving about 80 mph.

Ruidoso less than 8hrs.
Angel Fire less than 9hrs., although the last bit can be hairy.
Taos about 9 hours 30 minutes.
Wolf Creek Colorado usually takes around 11 hrs. but it's especially weather dependent.

Steamboat Springs, which is just shy of Wyoming takes us less than 14hrs.

Apropos of nothing. I just read a book about WWII era London and the various European governments and Royals who governed as best they could in absentia from London.

King Haakon VII acquitted himself very well as did the people of Norway putting up very determined resistance against the Wehrmacht's occupying forces. It took Haakon's advisors several days to convince the king to leave - and of course they were nearly killed several times. Haakon also orchestrated the removal of nearly all of Norway's gold stash by ship.

Well driving in the mountains in the winter is weather dependent. And with kids long drives always take more time as much as I try to minimize stops.

Anyway - Breckenridge takes us usually around 13 hours and this is what google maps currently shows. It does calculate at the speed limits but does not account for stops. Wolf creek for instance shows as 12 hr currently.

Also, since a large portion of the driving is not on the interstate, one needs to be mindful of Childress et al. speeding tickets

Well, that's good, but prepare for a sticker shock compared to Europe. Especially anything Vail.

It’s clear to me that most Texans care more about money than their health and well being.
