Whether you're for or against having the memorial, it should bother us that the city is spending $480k more to remove something you didn't even know existed.

Bothers me more that it was ever installed and allowed to stay up this long. It's high time we took those down...there are more that need to go.

Agreed! Especially since the city is around 800-1000 police officers short of what a city it's size needs. I'm wondering how much of a kickback the council members who voted to get rid of it are going to be getting?

mod cut It’s ridiculous that it costs this much to remove, but the idea that there are kickbacks involved is just plain ignorant. The council members who want this removed have wanted it removed for years - long before the woes in our police department became acute.

The statement about kickbacks goes back to the long history of corruption within the city council. Look it up if you don't believe me.

What do kickbacks have to do with this? The point is this is $480k spent on something that I guarantee you no one on here knew about or really cared that much about. Also, I would have removed it for $150k but they didn't ask me.

Good. A memorial to a failed insurrection over slavery isn't compatible with the type of city that Dallas is and is striving to be.

Spending $480k of TAXPAYER FUNDS to remove a monument that's already in a historic cemetery is ridiculous. It also remains to be seen if the monument will even be able to be removed without damaging the cemetery surrounding it. The citizens of Dallas would be much better served if the City used that money to hire more police officers, or fix potholes.

It is ridiculous. Shouldn't cost more than a stick or two of dynamite and a dump truck for the pieces.

Heck idk, I don't want to debate the civil war here and neither the mods ha. But my understanding is that it is debatable over exactly what the war was over. I know slavery was a part of it, how large, I think, is debatable from what I understand. Of course it depends on who you talk to but we didn't just go to war because of slaves as there were many (probably just as many) slaves in the north..

My point is, i bet no one on here knew this monument even existed and very few people have driven by and felt offended.. Yet we're spending MEGA SUMS of money to remove it.
