I have owned my home for several years. Rather suddenly (over a couple of months), the house began to have foundation issues. A foundation company said it was plumbing related - the house was rising. The plumber found that the cast iron sewage line under my house had rotted. After the sewage line is replaced, will the house settle down again? How long will it take? I need to know when/if to repair the extensive brick damage or whether to replace the brick with siding. Is there anything that can be done to speed the process?

Here's a very technical look at soil movement under a foundation and few issues with insurance claims for plumbing leaks and with engineering reports themselves. It is a good warning for a homeowner to consider a non-biased evaluation or review of an insurance report denighing a claim. But remember the author has some conflict of interest issues.

None the less, it's a good insight into what's going on underneath your foundation.
