Reminds me of when I was a kid and quicksand was a major concern of mine. Want to guess the number of times I've fallen in quicksand as an adult?

OP I know you want to live in a cheap place but I have to tell you … for a cop & a teacher, Long Island is where you want to be. I am sure you know … they are the highest paid people around here. Cops & teachers make bank on LI.

(That is if you can get a job teaching, which I heard is really tough.)

Teachers in other states are not paid very well. I don't know how Texas pays.

Luckily, as a state, Texas is in the top 10-15 usually for average K-12 teacher pay. But, more specifically, last I looked Dallas is usually listed in the top 5 cities in the country for K-12 teacher pay, up there with NYC and LA.

Very unlikely to die from a tornado. Higher chance for injuries and property damages although still very low. If you happen to be unlucky, it will be very sad though. Homeowner's insurance pay for destruction caused by a tornado but still is a big hassle to live elsewhere while your home is being rebuilt and you may lose your valuable items that cannot be replaced with money. Here is a data I found from tornadohistoryproject.com for notable tornadoes in the last 30 years.

DFW Tornado History - last 30 years
2019 - F3 Richardson (just happened)
2015 - F4 Garland, Dallas (10 dead, 468 injured, $26M damage)
2012 - F3 Foney (small damage)
2006 - F3 East of Anna, TX (3 dead)
2002 - F3 Fort Worth (no damage)
2000 - F3 Fort Worth (2 dead, 80 injured), Arlington (no damage)
1994 - F4 Dallas Landcaster (3 dead, 48 injured, $50-500M damage)
1993 - F2 East of Plano (1 dead, 63 injured, 500K-5M damage)
1990 - F4 near Weatherford (500K-5M damage)

Well, no one died because everyone was inside watching the Cowboy game. We got lucky.

I mean even with lots of people inside it is pretty impressive no one was killed by a E 3 Tornado. Those are pretty strong and not many people have basements here.
