No, not free, just different people paying for it. Since it's already heavily subsidized by tax dollars, why should those who use it not have to pay ANYTHING for the service? The rest of us are already paying more than we should (oh, and by the way, bond repayments come from taxes too).
OP doesn't want to answer my question.

Would he rather increase the Sales tax or Property Taxes to pay for these "Free Bus Services".

You pay one way or another. Nothing is free. Kind of like all that free healthcare we Dallas County Citizens provide at Parkland. Or the subsidized Colleges we pay for with the DCCC system.

Those 2 items cost me about $1500 a year just in property taxes.

The DART tax is I believe a .05% sales tax that we all pay. Maybe we raise it to a full 1%?

But doesn't that hurt the poor also?

Shouldn't you be worried about Houston?

Default You hit it right on the nose

The answer is to raise DART tax to 1% that would be plenty enough for DART to be free.believe me the extra tax would be mopre than covered by the savings of a transportation expense. You could even raise DART tax to 1.5% and it would still be cheaper than driving a car. This will also persuade and encourage people to use the public transit.

Default Have you ever tried to get something done in Houston??

This would be impossible in Houston. Remember that METRO was affected by Culberson blocking federal funding so that his friends would be happy. UT was prevented from building a huge data research center because of other corrupt politicians. Believe there would be a corrupt politician or lawyer with special interests and they would never let this hapen.

3 questions for the OP:

1. Do you ride DART?

2. Are you posting in the Houston forum about free public transit there?

3. If the answers to 1 & 2 are no, then why are you so concerned about this?

I haven't been impressed with your reasons thus far.

Default Well if you are in Arlington

You are in Arlington and complaining about me? Heck Arlington is probably one of the most underserved places in the DFW area for public transportation.

You'll never get Dallas County citizens to agree to a Sales Tax Increase so you can ride the bus free.

That would put our sales tax at almost 9%.

Give it up. This isn't California. Texas has always at least tried to keep it's taxes low.

Yes but I’m not trying to tell another city’s residents that they should pony up for free public transit. I’m in favor of public transit and voted in favor of it when Arlington had a referendum on it.

Default Fyi houston metro is already working on free fares

This is sad to see that Dallas is so far behind Houston when it comes to progressive issues. Free public transportation is one of the best things a city could do it makes a level playing field where both poor and rich are equal.
