I think your rental budget is fine, especially since it looks like you are interested in apartments and don't want something that requires a lot of upkeep.

Unless you have a specific reason to look in Richardson, I think that's too far away. Coppell, at least on these forums, is where we recommend people with kids live because the schools are good. I'm not sure that Coppell has that many apartments and any houses will be expensive because the schools are so well regarded. Las Colinas, Grapevine, or Valley Ranch are good options. The HEB area is probably a good bet too, but I'm not as familiar with that part of DFW.

You're correct about the storms. When choosing your residence, the top priority is to have a garage to protect that Tesla. This area can have hail storm at any season.
