Not Oceanside but...San Antonio. DoSeum, Aquarium, Natural Bridge Caverns, Morgan’s Wonderland, Sea World, Kiddie Park. On the drive down stop halfway in Salado at
the Sugar Shack candy store.

You're not getting to the ocean in 4-5 hours.

Austin or San Antonio would be my recommendation. If you're into the outdoors, Palo Duro Canyon is pretty cool (although there's not a lot of great dining nearby, if that's what you're into).

Unfortunately, 4-5 hours doesn't really get you to as many cool places as you'd expect.

Check out some of the small towns within 2-3 hours. Not on this list is Jefferson, where you can tour the main street and take a raft trip. Then there’s Canton’s First Monday.

For a couple days w/young kids, Glen Rose: Fossil Rim, Dinosaur Valley State Park, Dinosaur World (cheesy for adults but young kids should like) - and hour and half away

If you do go out to Glen Rose, be sure to go by Godley on the way out or back to eat at Del Norte Tacos. It's delicious. It's an interesting mix of a barbecue joint and taco shop. Nice people, too. Their beans are still, to this day, some of the best I've had.

I second San Antonio. No ocean but there are a couple of nice resorts that have lazy rivers. JW Marriott Resort has a pool with a sandy beach.

Hot Springs Arkansas

What to do? Stroll through downtown. Visit Lake Ouachita, way prettier than any lake in Texas and the water is more clear than the beaches in Galveston. Garvan Woodland Gardens and the Anthony Chapel are a must see. The state park is also great.

Where to stay? There are several beautiful historic hotels with great access to their downtown which is super walkable and family friendly. The Arlington has a cliff side pool. There’s also a lot of good air bnb’s and cabin rentals on Lake Ouachita.

Places to eat? Tons. Lots of great Southern Food/home cooking restaurants there. They have everything though.

Dallas to Galveston (or Kemah) is anywhere from 4 to 10 hours depending on the traffic in Houston area and where you are leaving from in Dallas!

Hill Country has lots of resorts to check out on lakes! We have stayed at Horseshoe Bay Resort. Beautiful resort on Lake Lyndon B Johnson about 4 hours from DFW. Resort has lake access, water craft rentals, restaurants, pools, hot tubs, spas, golf, tennis, mini-golf, and activity center for kids. Beautiful grounds and views of the lake. The town of Marble Falls is 15 min away for additional restaurants.

There are other Hill Country resorts too that look very family friendly we’d like to try out. JW Marriott and Hyatt have resorts with water slides, lazy rivers etc in addition to the pools.
