It's that you're asking about a metro area of 7 million people. Space sufficient to have stables and exercise yards and barrel racing is scarce and expensive in such a place. I'm sure someone knows of stables and places for such activity, but they are going to be few and far between and expensive.

For serious horse stuff you're going to be getting out of the DFW metro, or you're going to be spending a ton of money, or you're going to be doing a lot of driving.
This is a great post.

We live in McKinney which we like a lot but what keeps us here are our family and friends. We loved living in Tennessee and I still relax when I get to those rolling hills and trees. We lived just south of Nashville and the weather was great and you have 4 seasons. You really don't get fall here. We used to get a lot more company there because we knew so many people within a day's drive while Texas is a plane ride away for most.. Having said all that, you're in a different situation so you should go with what suits you more. It would be nice if you could visit both places so you get a better feel. Good Luck!

I've lived in both... TN for 3.5 years (Franklin, TN which is Williamson County, wealthiest county in the state where the majority of country music stars reside). We've been in TX since 2001 (NW Houston for just over 6 years & now DFW for 13+ years). Politics are similar in Nashville & DFW, as the more you get away from the city centers the more conservative things get... we like that.

North TX doesn't have the scenery like much of TN, but it also isn't in a valley like Nashville. My allergies were terrible in TN, so Houston was so much better. Houston has high humidity (NOT FL humidity) compared to DFW. Houston has less expensive dining which will add up the longer one lives there. Houston is great for mild winters, but the other nine months are pretty humid. Greater Nashville weather is decent but TX does have more sunny days. GN has lots of great restaurants, much like the DFW metroplex.

Places to avoid in TN: Memphis, Jackson, primarily west TN in general. Places to avoid in TX: Houston, unless you like traffic & humidity, Austin unless you are artsy and liberal. Most of TX is fine, but since it is so big you'll think you're in different states depending on where you are. Most of TX is red, but the blue has grown in Austin, San Antonio, the Valley to some extent, Houston and parts of DFW because of folks fleeing Cali, Illinois, and other blue states.

TX has a little of everything to offer depending on where you reside.
