Hello,

Did anyone attend Amberton University? If so, what was your experience with this school? I'm currently considering completing a MS program in Human Resources offered by Amberton. I live in Phoenix, AZ and am not familiar with this school. It is located in Garland, TX and is not known here at all. I tried to research online but there seem to be not many reviews. The program seems to incorporate a wide array of classes in HR and it is very cost effective- we don't have anything of comparable value offered here. I am trying to figure out if it is a good school and what the quality of education they provide is. I would really appreciate any feedback on this. Thank you in advance.

I obtained my MS in Human Resources from Amberton back in 2001. I actually attended all of my classes in person since online education wasn’t as common back then, and I can say that I definitely had to work hard to earn my grades. The instructors were very good, and the knowledge I obtained has been extremely useful in my HR career. I have heard that Amberton is one of the “best value” programs for working adults. The university saves money because they have a small campus that is really geared more towards online students and working adults.

Good luck in your decision!

Thank you do much, Christie! Did you already have HR related experience when you were working towards your degree? Do you think this degree can be helpful in transitioning to HR? I currently work as an admin in a legal department.

I will warn you: HR is a very difficult field to break into. Even the entry-level positions often require some experience. I was fortunate that since I was using my employers tuition reimbursement program, my manager put me in a position coordinating our department’s college recruiting efforts where I could gain some HR experience. So, by the time I graduated, I did have HR experience, and that helped open more doors!

What made you pick Amberton? How much would it cost you?

I don't know anything about their HR program. I am getting a MS in Mental Health Counseling. I looked at Amberton for their program there. I spoke to several counselors in DFW about their impression on Amberton. They said that there are a lot of counselors that have gotten their Masters at Amberton and they have gone on and done well in their career.

Amberton is known as a good school for adults looking for a school tailored to working adults. I ended up not choosing it because I was looking for a program that was 100% online. Their program was not.

I don't remember the pricing, but I do remember it was cheaper than your traditional university.

It's an accredited program aligned to SHRM curriculum and they charge $855 per class where typically most schools charge $ 600-700 per credit or really good/ well known ones easily $1000 and over that per credit hour.

Thank you, Christie for your feedback! Do you feel employers in general care if a degree is from a well- known/ prestigious school? Or as long as it is accredited it is good enough? For example, because Amberton is such a small school it is not well-known here at all. I have a feeling it is still better than University of Phoenix for example that is well known but has a sort of bad reputation from what I hear.

My degree has opened doors for me for the last 18 years. As far as I’m aware, no employer has looked down on me because I didn’t get it from a prestigious school.

I agree Phoenix does not have a good reputation among employers.
