I've seen several threads on here about schools, and wanted to start this to ask a few questions specific to the DFW area.

I grew up in SoCal (don't shoot me) and went to a pre-school, then K-6, 7-8, and 9-12. All public.

Nowadays, I see 4 options:

1) Public school, just like I did,
2) Home school,
3) Private school,
4) Montessori

(Are there others I'm missing)?

What are the main pros / cons of each?

Thanks

Montessori is a pedagogical model which can be public or private.

I might add a charter school to your list.

The options you've cited have been around for a long time. Not sure I understand your statement that "nowadays" these are the choices.

As PP noted, charter schools are probably the only relatively newer entrant to the schooling options. Publicly funded but privately operated (with oversight but still largely free of public input or attempted micromanagement).

I grew up in Long Island, New York and had the same exact educational experience as the OP.

I am also interested in the main pros/cons, specifically between public (let's assume one of the "good" DISD public schools or RISD) and private/charter in the DFW area. Any insight is appreciated!

Where are you thinking of moving to in the Metroplex ? That might help us in answering your question because otherwise I could use give you some blanket statement about public/private school that would apply to anywhere in the US

There are many subsets within these options. For example, in public school DISD - you have:
- Home schools (i.e., what you are zoned to)
- Choice schools that have a specialty and apply to
- Single Gender (which might be a type of choice school as well) - like Solar
- Montessori (might be a type of Choice, but has its own requirements)
- Magnet schools at both the 4-8th grade level (for talented and gifted kids), Middle School 6-8, and High School 9-12th. There are multiple options but the TAG, SEM, Booker T (arts) are all exceptional.

So basically - even within public schools there are tons of options depending upon district. That doesn't include Charter schools which are a different type of 'free' education. There are also hybrid private schools that feature a couple days of week of homeschooling. There are public and private Montessori. There are private - parochial schools (Catholic) that are PK-8th. etc, etc.

Point is - its definitely more complicated/options than it used to be. BUT it really depends upon area. If you live in a typical suburb, your kids will typically just go to the neighborhood elementary, middle, and high school. Of course in areas like Plano - there are 9-10 and 11-12th grade campuses....
