I imagine there's still crime but the area has cleaned up quite a bit. There's a slow push coming from the south end of Skillman and it's moving north. They aren't "there" yet, but it looks miles better than it did when I was a kid.

Danger is relative though. For some people, I'd say the area is much too hot for them. Someone that grew up in the Queensbridge projects, Cabrini Green or Third Ward would laugh at the idea that 75243 is dangerous. Probably good to drive around at different times of the day and try to get a feel for it as best you can.
We live at Audelia/Walnut Hill and have never had any issues at the shopping center that has the LA Fitness and Mi Cocina. Picasso’s shut down and it was rumored that The Mercury was looking into the spot. There’s nothing to fear at the town center either. Fish City Grill and Taco diner have lively patios for dining and the Sprouts is a nice addition to the area. The Walnut Hill and Audelia intersection has a new brewery, coffee shop, pilates and yoga studios, and several eateries.

Yes, the apartments do cause issues in the area, but there’s always opposition when talks of redeveloping them starts up again with people pushing for more affordable housing (not less). There are many $1M+ homes going up throughout the area, so it’s definitely in transition.

Audelia and WALNUT is different than WALNUT HILL. These are two different streets in different neighborhoods. Walnut HILL is old Lake Highlands and is great. Walnut is further north and notoriously sketchy.

Walnut Hill in Lake Highlands was named Kingsley till recently; when they pushed WH all the way through they renamed it. Different road than Walnut St. over by Richland College.

Remember that well! Used to live at the Kingsley Creek apartments right next to Huntington Lakes at the intersection of Skillman & Kingsley (now Walnut Hill).

I remember waiting for the 583 DART bus that was ALWAYS late mid-day and walking $60 worth of groceries from Albertsons (now Fiesta) all the way down the street. Nice little walk in summer....lol! Used to work out at the Bally's in the shopping center behind Jakes. Time flies.

That's true. Many of the rougher apartments to the south of it where the LH Town Center sits were torn down. The apartments to the north along Whitehurst and in the Skillman/Audelia corridor going up to Walnut are still hotspots for crime. But I think the whole area is better than it was between 2000-2015.

I was a 140-lb teenager so it was pretty easy lol. That 16-year old stamina is no joke.

Yup. The price comes with the territory.

I downsized and moved from North Dallas to Lake Highlands in late 2014 - Merriman Park North. Was is really WORSE during 2000 - 2015? I am shocked at how rampant crime is in Lake Highlands. Sadly, most of it seems to come from the thousands of dilapidated apartments.

Does anyone know if additional apartment complexes are planning to be demolished and perhaps replaced with townhomes or new apartments? Friends who live in Merriman Park Estates saw a major improvement in quality of life when hundreds were torn down at LH Town Center. I'm not for displacing hundreds of families who need low-income housing, but these apartments are beyond salvaging thanks to private equity companies looking to squeeze every penny out of them possible with little to no investment in maintenance. They are so poorly managed it's ridiculous, and it's the tenants who pay the price.
