With housing insanity around DFW are there any area's around - within say a 40 min commute to DFW that are still affordable? I really only have to go into the office in Irving maybe once a week and we don't have kids, so school is not something important to us.

"Affordable" is subjective based on each individuals financial abilities. If you can say what your basic requirements are for the house and a price range you may get more appropriate answers.

Simple answer is probably not. The whole country is going through housing shortage. It's not local to DFW market.

Commuting to what part of DFW? A 40-minute rush hour commute to, say, North Dallas or Far North Dallas isn't likely to put you in any more affordable / less crazy areas that are considerable "desirable" (the merits of that last qualifier being questionable). Versus a commute to southern Fort Worth or Mesquite, for example, where you could reach outlying areas that might have at least a slightly lower level of crazy.

Even out in my neck of the woods (NE of Rockwall), in what used to be Smallsville, I have watched new build prices increase as much as 18% over the past 6 - 9 months. There really is no escaping it as long as the Builders believe they can get the prices for their homes.

Unfortunately the same issues affecting escalating prices on new homes are also affecting existing homes.

Of course with no children you can always look into the Tiny Home market https://www.facebook.com/tinyhomesup..._fb_noscript=1

40 minutes in rush hour could be 5 miles. You might look south say Cedar Hill, but even then it would probably be an hour.

My husband and I just bought a house in Kaufman County. There are less expensive homes in the rural areas, but your commute to Irving will be a lot more than 40 invites, especially in rush hour. If you’re willing to drive an hour or so, you can look in Ferris/unincorporated Ellis County, and in Mabank/Kemp/Scurry/unincorporated Kaufman County. If you’re willing to buy a fixer-upper or a mobile home, you’ll have a fair amount of choices.

What’s your budget?

Wow... this isn't the first time recently I've seen someone mention buying a mobile/manufactured home to be able to afford a home around here... Sign of the times. It'll be interesting to see how the market fares next year, current growth/price appreciation is just not sustainable, not even for high income earners.

The market has a way to go for that to occur.

My home is knocking on the door to being valued at a million dollars now. Our HHI is well into 6 figures, but we wouldn't qualify to buy this home with 20% down now. We're one of many who are basically stuck in our current home, can't afford to move up to a better home, and not worth downsizing to a smaller home while still having to pay current insane prices.
