Well, there are 7.5 million people in this metro, and what? three or four hundred shootings a year, most of which are people who know each other, as in drug deals gone wrong etc. Maybe 50 truly random shootings, almost none of which are happening in Uptown or Park Cities. Maybe 5-10 incidents per year in those areas.

You've been fed a line of poop. It's the big city, you have to keep your wits about you, don't stroll through the ghetto three sheets to the wind at 2 am on Saturday singing "I'm in the money..." - but you've been fed a line of bull.

Uptown, shmuptown.

I'm sure you can, but I overlook the park.

I see nothing but green and skyline from 30+ foot windows. It's heaven.

Media exaggerates to sell copy. I no longer take anything the media says seriously.

Definitely stay in a safe area to better your chances...I was surprised at how everyone has a home security system here or big dogs to protect their homes from armed robbery. I'm actually seriously thinking of purchasing a home in a guarded gated community. The fact is guns are so accessible here that there's no doubt gun-related crimes are going to be up there compared to Toronto. You should probably get one for self-protection as one of the first things to do once you get here. At the end of the day, I would worry more about driving here because people are craazzzyyy.

Btw... if you are arriving soon you may want to schedule your driver's license appointment because if you do it now... you're in line for a December date.

I gave up on getting a local appointment and just flew down to Houston. Appointments are wide open there for some reason.

Everyone we know have been successful getting appointments in Garland. You have to try to set an appointment at 7am for the day. If nothing is available that day, you can try the following day. I recommend you give it a shot.

Driving is certainly the worry. I had a surgical procedure a few weeks ago downtown and I worried about the rush-hour drive more than I did the surgery.

My SO who has never had a TX license before managed to get an appointment out in Mineral Springs about 3 weeks out. I have had a TX license before, so there were appointments just a few days later.
