This has nothing to do with other people.

The only reason new developments don't have alleys is so the developers can squeeze a little more profit out of the available land.
This right here.

I hate garages that are in the front of the house.

I'm really not a fan of your neighbors being able to see when you are coming and going from your home.

How about a 20-car garage underneath the house. Then you won't have to worry about it.

$37.5 million and an architect that is supposedly renowned, but this is just tasteless. Those cascading windows down a staircase, those turrets, the needless busyness on every surface and the entire entryway.....

I would never have guessed an architect had a hand in this.

-----------------------

Edit to add: Ahh, the article itself has the explanation for the terrible design (Thompson is the homeowner):

“I have luxury homes all over the country, and I took bits and pieces of my favorite aspects of various homes and incorporated them into this home,” Thompson said.

Even though she’s designing her dream home...

So there's an architect dancing on stage, but the homeowner is the one pulling the strings. Makes sense now.

Can anyone drop a link with the most representative street view of an alley in Dallas?
So much talking without actual pictures.
I'm not sure how good or bad it is.
Got really intrigued by this thread.
Not sure if it's common in Houston...

By the way, the second one allows you to cruise down the whole alley. Nicer than many streets :-)

Thanks! This is quite informative.
I guess that's less common in Houston.
I don't have certain opinion on this since I haven't personally compared properties with and without an alley. At least doesn't seem bad to me.

Personally don't like the one lane alleys. Too many close calls when folks are backing out. And not to mention the inconvenience if you meet a car headed in the other direction.

The first home on the left as you enter the alley was built for pro golfer Justin Leonard by the architectural firm Stocker, Hoestery and Montenegro and made major headlines when it sold in 2015 (to Dan Hunt who owns the FC Dallas soccer club and happens to be the grandson of billionaire & iconic Dallasite Lamar Hunt and brother of KC Chiefs owner Clark Hunt) for just under $1,000/SF. It’s probably worth $18-20M today.

The last home on the right as you exit the alley is 4700 St Johns (with four garage doors), owned by another Hunt - Patrick Sands, son of Caroline Hunt (Lamar’s sister) who developed The Crescent office complex in Uptown and owned The Mansion on Turtle Creek and the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. It sold for almost $16M a few years ago. Probably around $20M now.

The rest of the homes are all in the $3-8M range, the empty lot is 1/2 acre and probably around $3.5-4M. Former VP Dick Cheney lived in the next block down until 2002.

Point being, when two billionaires live on the block and a former United States Vice President lived down the block - and they are all obviously fine with alley & side entry garages….our Canadian poster needs to sit down.
