@Wittgenstein's Ghost - why not live in Atlanta?
Have you ever spent time in Atlanta? There aren't many places that are nice and safe. Atlanta's crime problem is getting worse, and even places like midtown (which I stayed in last month) feel straight up dangerous at night.

If you're talking suburbs way, way outside of downtown? Sure. But Atlanta itself has very little going for it, IMO. Even Buckhead is trying to get away and form its own city. And the traffic is even worse there than in DFW.

I'm far from a DFW homer. I left DFW five years ago because I like outdoor stuff and was tired of the heat and sprawl. But I'd pick DFW over Atlanta in a heartbeat.

This is going to be tricky. The reason is that DFW is changing so rapidly. The mostly white neighborhood of today wont be that way tomorrow. Look at Frisco. It went from 3/4 white to barely half white in 10 years.

If this is important to you, I dont know that Id be considering the immediate DFW area.

My budget is $350K but it needs to be a single family.

SE Asia is not the only trip I'd like to make, also places in Europe, perhaps a little bit of Africa.

The only other location in the US that serves such wide ranging destinations is Atlanta and they have income tax, so no go for me.

@WorldKlas thanks for the suggestion.
You could consider the Chattanooga, TN metro.

As of January 1st 2021, Tennessee is now a full no state income tax state.

The property tax on the median home in Dallas at $4,160 per year and the median home in Chattanooga at $1,660 per year.

Per Bing Maps searches I just did, the East Ridge area in Chattanooga is 1hr and 44 minutes from Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. Nearby East Brainerd is 1 hour and 50 minutes, and Soddy Daisy....on the other side of the Chattanooga metro.....is 2 hours and 5 minutes from the airport in Atlanta.

The Chattanooga metro hugs the TN/GA border.

Tennessee has a fairly high sales tax rate, but a Costco for the Chattanooga metro is right across the border in Ringgold, Georgia.

One of the reasons this Costco was built there was because of the savings re sales taxes. I lost the link, but the article I read mentioned that the lower sales tax rate in Ringgold, GA vs. inside Tennessee in the Chattanooga metro was one of the factors Costco considered re the location. The East Ridge area in Chattanooga is only about 3 1/2 miles from the Costco in Ringgold, GA.

Chattanooga won't have the flight options that DFW has.
