Is there a way to protect your sprinkler heads that gets run over by lawn mowers frequently?

I have one located on a weird spot in the middle of my front lawn near the borderline with my neighbor. Every 2-3 months, it gets run over by one of the mowing guys (mine or his) causing higher water bills and dead grass if left unnoticed. I thought about placing a marker flag (like the one's utility company use) around the area but they may not stay put for long. And also my neighbor likes to cut his grass very low and that could damage the head as well.

Maybe try install a pvc pipe around it so it's easily identifiable and protected? Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Is the head being cut by mower blades or crushed by the weight of big mowers passing over? Assuming the first the best plan would be to lower the head such that the entire thing is underground.

If the weight of the mower is cracking the head connection - or you need to lower the head, use a flex connector like this:

Dig around it and..

See if they sell a shorter sprinkler hear or..

Dig a little more and push it farther into the ground.

Or tell your lawn guy to pay attention and stop running over the heads.

Or all of the above.

Buy a metal marker stake at HD/Lowes, and stick it in the ground right next to the head. That will allow them to see the head so hopefully they will not keep running it over.

They sell metal rings (search sprinkler helmets) that you can put around them, or you can use pvc if you can cut it to the appropriate length and jam it into the ground. Then of course the head has to be inside the protector.

It depends, sometimes the head is broken, but this time the base is broken, not sure how that would happen. The problem is the head doesn't retract fully inside always and sticks out.

The flex connector idea above is good one But a properly set and properly functioning head should retract below grade and not be crushed by movers even w/o a flexible connection.

In 15-30 minutes you can replace that unit for about $6.

When the head does not go down it probably has dirt in it. Just lubricate it and clean it. It's all very simple.

100%.

My go to move..........remove/unscrew the suspect head and turn that zone on for about 30 seconds evacuating dirt and whatnot. 75% of the more, maybe more, that fixes heads that won't retract.
