Hell no I would buy an island in the Carribean if I had unlimited funds.

The only reason I can think of for people to stay in DFW if they had unlimited money was because of family reasons. But even that's a little sketchy becuase if you have unlimited money you can just move your family wherever you want to live anyways.

I agree, DFW is boring as hell - I’m glad I travel a fair bit for work to get away here and there. I don’t think the hyper-consumerism is confined to DFW though, that you will find everywhere. The bland endless suburbs and developments with their stupid names are also omnipresent just about all over the southwest, and with Uber/Lyft I could really care less about public transportation.
There's a lot better places than Austin if money is unlimited.

Austin is hot as hell.

I can think of a thousand other places i'd rather be besides DFW or Austin if I had unlimited money.

lol right? I thought the Austin thing was funny when I read it. I can’t imagine what in Austin is that exciting compared to Dallas. There’s actually a lot more stuff to do here than Austin.

Spent the majority of my life here, but if money was no option I would be gone before the end of this year. Only thing holding me here is money and family and they've been talking about moving else where for a few years now. There are a lot of places that are worse than the D/FW and some of the hate that it gets can be funny at times, but there are certain things that it just can't hold a candle too. With a realist unlimited budget Colorado, Florida, Montana, UK, and New Mexico all have cities/areas that I'd choose from.

I just got back from Los Angeles, and if there ever was an over rated city that one is it. Awful roads, run down infrastructure, lots of graffiti, and insanely high cost of living with salaries that are largely not commensurate with the extremely high cost of gas, groceries, and housing.

Chicago, where I’m originally from is a cesspool of riff raff and violent crime. It has extremely high taxes and is corrupted by incompetent liberal governance.

NYC is expensive, crowded, dirty, and increasingly unsafe with violent crime surging throughout the city exponentially. Ditto San Francisco.

Dallas, while somewhat boring, offers the best of all of the above mentioned cities without the violent crime. Added benefits include a robust job market, comparatively low cost of living, no extreme weather, and centralized location. Dallas is cosmopolitan and it’s museums and shopping are on par with LA, SF, and Chicago.

No where is perfect but for me DFW is the best choice.

Not even close, in terms of what I enjoy doing.

I have lived in many places in my lifetime and I think every place has pros and cons. I appreciate the lower cost of living in DFW, the amazing job market, the nice airport, and cultural diversity, but I really find the entire metro to be so bland, soulless, and lacking in character. DFW encapsulates many things that are wrong with America: suburban sprawl, wastefulness, no public transit, and corporate greed (like foreign companies owning the roads and charging people to use them).

I previously lived in Seattle and moved away because the cost of living was so high. I also didn't like the direction the city was headed towards politically. But one thing the city had was plenty of character and beautiful nature. I was proud to tell people I lived in Seattle and always looked forward to coming home to a beautiful city after a vacation elsewhere. My friends back in Seattle told me they wouldn't live anywhere else.

But I think things in Dallas are quite different. If you ask the recent transplants about their move, I bet a lot of them would say that they would have stayed in CA or wherever they came from if money was not a concern. I guess it makes sense and life is all about trade offs. My home in Dallas is much nicer than anything I could ever have in Seattle without earning $300K/yr, but the tradeoff is living in a place that lacks character (in my opinion).

Would you still live in DFW if money was of no concern?
Of course not!

The guy who literally has the most unlimited money on the planet has chosen to live in Austin.

I kind of get what you are saying, but really, how much of your statement is based on the reality of the current world? There are more scenic places, there are more temperate climates. But a better combination of all things? Maybe not so many other places...

This and similar lines of discussion are pretty silly. Money always matters.

I think a more rational question that is rarely asked.......why do/will so many people compromise their long term financial health to live in say NYC, ski-towns, SF, Hana etc. when those cities/areas make little sense other than on the feelings/emotional side?

Because they value that over the financial aspects.
