Hey y’all, we recently moved to the area and were wondering which school to send our child to. Our house is in Garland city limits but is zoned to Berkner HS in RISD. Because of Garland ISD’s choice of school option we also have the option to send our child to North Garland HS which is equally the same distance away. Which one do you guys prefer and is there any big difference worth sending our child to one school than the other?

Are you 100% sure you have that option available to you? ISD’s don’t follow city limits and if your house is zoned to RISD I would not assume GISD is an option just because your address is in Garland.

Yes, Garland ISD has open enrollment which means I can apply my child even if we don’t live in the district.

Yes, but if you don't live in GISD then you can't send your kid to GISD schools. You just wrote above that your house is in RISD, not GISD.

Not clear why anyone would want to send them to N. Garland rather than Berkner.

Garland is open enrollment IF you live in Garland...meaning your kids can go to any of the schools. NOT that if you are zoned to RISD.

But either way, Berkner is much higher regarded.

"Through Open Enrollment, a Garland ISD education is available to students who reside outside the district’s attendance boundaries."

We are new to the dfw area in general so I don’t know much about the demographics.

GISD’s website says it’s open to anyone outside the district but I guess it doesn’t even matter since so many people recommend Berkner. Thanks.
