Evans101: Thanks for the post. It was a great representation of what this city has to offer.

Evans101: Thank you for your post. I could not have said it any better myself and everything you mentioned is what I miss about living in Mesquite. Most people I know personally say "thrashy" things about the community, yet they really do not know anything about the city (they have never lived there either!).

Is it true that teaching in MISD for five years can have some (or all) of your student loans forgiven because MISD is considered "low-income?" I don't mean to snap on anybody's school, but I went to Tosch and I went to St. Anthony, and we're talking about two completely different schools here. Yet dang near every school in Dallas County is considered "low-income."

Quote:
You qualify for cancellation (discharge) of up to 100 percent of a Federal Perkins Loan if you have served full time in a public or nonprofit elementary or secondary school system as a

- teacher in a school serving students from low-income families; or

- special-education teacher, including teachers of infants, toddlers, children, or youth with disabilities; or

- teacher in the fields of mathematics, science, foreign languages, or bilingual education, or in any other field of expertise determined by a state education agency to have a shortage of qualified teachers in that state.
This is quite the news to my mother, the future MISD math teacher. I know times are hard nowadays, but...MISD? No, REALLY?

Fancysea -- It is the start of another school year. I just wanted to check up on you to see how your search ended. Did you end up choosing a neighborhood in Mesquite?

=)

We moved here from out of state a few months back and after having my kids attend MISD schools this year I agree you do NOT want to be in an area that feeds into McDonald MS/North Mesquite High School. They have LOTS of kids in gangs. The school principal will deny it but it is true.

Mesquite is worse than what it used to be when I grew up but it is not what people make it seem to be. The city is not dangerous by any means. There are some parts getting older and more run down than in the past but don't let people tell you it's some real bad place to live and the schools are terrible.

Oh, and the word 'gang' is used loosely today. Just because they call themselves a gang, does not mean they are doing stuff the real gang members are doing.
