My Mom pays $650 per year on her house that has a current market appraisal of about $280,000. My Dad turned 65 in 1994, which is when the school taxes were frozen, and the Harris County over 65 exemptions are large enough to exceed the value of the property. She pays school and MUD taxes, that's it.

My guess is that Texas has become significantly less of a low tax burden state in recent years because property taxes have skyrocketed as property value have gone up.

Personally, I think taxes should mirror income, not what you own.
It is a debatable topic. As far as overall tax burden, Texas ranks in at 32 out of 50 states. So I think that is pretty good. My family has saved a TON of money not having to pay state income taxes and we will continue saving a lot of money. But I don't think this is a good state for retires because Texas ranks #7th highest in property tax %. Although, there are certain tax exemptions available for 65 and older. But ultimately there are some much better states for retirees when it comes to taxes like Tennessee and Florida for example. They have much lower property tax rates.

Disagree. Taxes should mirror what you use (cost the government), not income, nor what you own.

Income is a measure of production/productive value. You get more of what you pay for and less of what you tax.

You don't want to tax/punish production.

A higher sales tax in exchange for abolishing property taxes altogether and codifying it in the Constitution.....that I can get on board with.

Taxes should be as close to $0 as humanly possible, period.

So a family with $50k HHI who uses DART for transit, walks a lot of miles on public sidewalks, logs on to internet at the library, swims at a public pool or lake, sends their kids to public school should pay MORE than a $500k HHI family who owns several cars, never walks anywhere, has private internet, private pool, and uses private schools? WTF.

Modern civilization would collapse under your plan. There aren’t enough poor people to tax. And you’d only be making them poorer.

Families with $500k HHI should also pay for your gas, utilities, insurance, tuition and beer money. For the prosperity of our civilization.
