Since the DFW area attracts so many out of state transplants as well as people out of the country, I wondered what was the percentage of people living in the area that are from out of state? I tried looking it up on Google but I must not be looking in the right place. I saw something in passing that said 70% but that sounded way too high. This kind of stuff really interests me.

You could probably dig enough. I get a source that says 23% were born out the country for Dallas County, so I'd guess 40% from out of state is probably not too far off.

There aren't many indigenous Texans in DFW, most are transplants. Some of us came earlier than others but we aren't natives. Even among percentage of people born here, not many are multigenerational Texans.

I came to DFW in 1978 bringing along a child born in 1975. He lives here still. At that time lots of transplants, and it continues! A whole lot of GenX’s and millenials who came with their parents and grew up here are, I guess, not considered native Texans. I’m guessing 50-60% of residents are not Texas born but so many have been here longer than “Natural born Texans.”

I think there might have been a discussion on this before.

San Antonio is probably the city with the most Texans (for a big city) and dallas probably has the least.

I agree. I attended elementary school in the '80s near Richardson's Telecom Corridor. A large percentage of the kids were from Chicago and most of the rest weren't from Texas.

If you live the northern part of Dallas or the northern burbs your likely to be surrounded by transplants and your view is likely to be skewed. If you live in the southern, western are eastern part of DFW or those burbs your likely be surrounded by folks born and raised in the area.

It's surprisingly difficult to find this information (I still haven't been able to find metro-area percentages of non-Texan natives).

I did find state-wide numbers. About 60% of Texas residents are native Texans. Statewide, about 17% are foreign-born. Similar to the foreign-born numbers, I would surmise that the DFW percentage of native Texans is probably slightly lower than the state-wide number. Probably somewhere in the middle of the 55-60% range.

Related numbers that are easy to find:
Percentage of foreign-born population in Texas metros:

DFW: 19.1%
Houston: 24.1%
San Antonio: 12.1%
Austin: 15.7%
McAllen: 25.9%
El Paso: 23%
Corpus Christi: 8.2%
