You might look into downtown Plano - Historical Downtown Plano, Texas where you can Live, Play, Dine, Shop and so much more! - probably the closest "urbanized" area to UTD. You could probably bicycle to UTD from there with no problem. Good accessibility to public transportation for heading to downtown Dallas also.

Default Why not Waterview Apartments?

They are on UTD campus. I lived there for years. You could make friends with car driving people for your social life.

Or if you want a nicer apartment, try Eastside Apts in downtown Plano. It's on the Dart rail line and I hear that you can't sleep at night for all the parties.

I'm moving to Spring Pointe apartments which isn't close to UTD, but it is 1.5 miles from the Bush Turnpike Rail Station where I noticed a UTD bus stop. (Yes, we have a highway named after Bush.)

Yes, but the Bush is not the current president. He is the current president's father, the first president Bush.

The tradition seems to be to name ring roads in Dallas after Texas presidents. If we ever build a third ring road, then we will have a problem in how to name it to avoid confusion.

In that event, maybe we should name the existing freeway Bush the First. Then if, god forbid, another should be built and named for W we could call it Bush the Worst.

Hmmmmm.... this forum is supposed to be nonpolitical...

Normally, when you put your opinions (or taunts) in a political blog, they are read and appreciated by the converted... as in preaching to the choir. Going politico in a reloc forum just antagonizes somebody... and raises the general level of anger in a society. The people I encounter on the highway are already disturbed enough... don't need you to make it worse.

Hey, Lakewooder, I remember the street cars and the electric trolley. We had the trolley in our area too, I think Lindsley was the name of the street. I grew up on Valencia St. and went to Woodrow Wilson HS. Public transportation was very poor in those days. It would have taken my mother over an hour to get to work by bus, so she had a car which took about 20-30 minutes, depending on the traffic. My father worked in Garland, so, of course, he had a car too. After I went to work for a doctor in the Baylor Hospital area, I also had a car and could go home for lunch.

Deep Ellum was a BAD neighborhood when I was growing up and I'm in my 60s. Also Hall St. was bad and everyone avoided it when possible, particularly at night.

Default From another European heading to UTD

Hello sir,

Hope you're still enjoying your days in Berlin. I found your post as I was searching for opinions on Dallas myself. I am moving to UTD in August, starting a PhD there in Humanities and have pretty much the same questions and problems, including no car and public transportation. However since I've been studying in the States for the past 6 years I know I should not expect a lot from the public transportation. Except NYC (but that's another story). So I'm expecting the worst and am hoping once there it won't be so bad.
Housing wise, I have learned there are some opportunities within reach of the free UTD Shuttle Line (McCallum Blvd direction). The housing on campus seems to be a ripoff, given the apartments come unfurnished and no utilities are included in the price. I spoke with some students and they all told me it ain't worth it living there.
Anyhow, I'm not here to give too much advice, but since we're in the same situation, I'd be glad to keep in touch with you somehow.
Btw, I studied in Berlin for half a year and loved the city. I'm heading to Vienna next week, before Texas gets a hold of me.
good luck and safe travels
c.
