Hello everyone (or should I practice saying howdy y'all?)!
I am going to be moving to Dallas and am searching for a 2br/2ba home for under 200K. Is that doable?
Priorities: Relatively safe, good elementary school, trees, no cookie cutter houses
I have to admit I am still a little nervous about living in "The South", as my classic NY Jewish mother has tried to poison my mind, but I have found much comfort in internet research-- you guys are all so helpful! I have been looking at Lakewood but so far prices seem a bit high for me. Any advice?
I am also needing a place to rent (townhome is fine) with a yard for my dog while I search.

Try looking in 75223 - Hollywood Heights.
And 75218 - Little Forest Hills

These areas are just outside of Lakewood.

In zip 75218 add Old Lake Highlands to your search.

My wife and I are orthodox Jews and have had no problems being Jewish in this part of the country. Jews in NY face alot more anti-Semitism than they do here.

Nice two BR's are hard to find and hard to unload when you get ready to sell them......you can probably find a 3/2 for the same price and it would be a much better investment - just my opinion.

Look in 75248 zip code - city of Dallas, Richardson schools. Lots of Jewish folks in these parts. Exemplary elementary schools (look at Brentfield Elementary and Bowie Elementary). Most houses will be 3 or 4 bedrooms, prices starting at $175,000 and going way up. This area is in Far North Dallas, north of Arapaho, east of Preston, west of Coit, south of the Collin County Line (McCallum Road is in Collin County, just south of there).

The L-Streets area of Lake Highlands, which is the area north of Lakewood, should meet your requirements and provide easy access to Lakewood, downtown, I-635 and TX-75. It is also in Richardson School district. The local schools servicing that area are considered very good.

L Streets Neighborhood Association

Incidentally, you'll be VERY close to Tony's - one of our favorite Lake Highlands restaurants. The best Calzone in Dallas - hands down - and VERY reasonably priced (bring your own wine also - no corking fees either).

Yes GayleTX- that would be preferable if it is similar pricing, but I didn't know if many bungalows were built smaller.
I don't know exactly where my husband will be working (he will be a store manager at Minyards Foods).
Thanks for the reassurance rb4browns- I had heard it was a far cry from my mom's mental image.
Thank you all! Keep it coming!

Oh, I'd wait to find out which Minyards store he will be working at before deciding where to live.
