Bishop Arts fits this description. Here are some of the best kept properties to rent:
Good Space- Bishop Arts District Dallas Living Working
Places in Bishop Arts that are great for hanging out - gay friendly - are Hunky's, Tillman's, Veracruz...just to get an idea of what's in the area. And Kavala up the street. New place about to open, I think it's called Bolsa.

You will not be comfortable in the suburbs around Dallas.

I agree. North Oak Cliff could be a good compromise between urban & suburban. It has a small town feel to it, although it is only 5 minutes away from downtown. It offers a lot of character because it is an older area and it is very gay friendly.

Only warning about N. Oak Cliff is that there are mostly coupled up there in case you are looking..otherwise I would say go for Oak Lawn/Cedar Springs/Turtle Creek, Knox-Henderson or the areas in East Dallas (that list is most to least gay people). Not so sure about your living in N. Dallas.

As it has been pointed out, Dallas is not as urban as Boston - most of these areas are original streetcar suburbs -- more compact and character than what we call suburbs.

Your descriptions of some of these neighborhoods within Dallas sound very appealing. I find Boston to be too dense, old, and crowded. Somewhere between urban and suburban would be a good fit. I'll definitely have a look at Oak Lawn although I'm not seeking out a wild 20 something singles scene, and perhaps something like N. Oak Cliff would be more up my alley to settle into.

Big question. How do folks in Dallas compare to other Texas cities socially? I've been to Austin where I thought people were great and San Antonio where they were even friendlier though I wouldn't want to live there. I did really hot it off with Texans socially gay and straight alike. Dallas seems to have a more sophiticated reputation among Texas cities. Any thoughts?

Agree with most others: Based on your questions, Plano would probably not be a real good fit (funny question for Mom in Garland though, what do/did YOU push your babies around in?).

Lakewood, Oak Lawn and similar locations that were mentioned would be better choices.
