that is why I said what I did--for people with few skills and no intro into the jobs community it IS hard to get a job that you want to keep...plenty of people advertise but from what I read a lot of them are just skimming for prospects...

Well, I think I strayed off topic, but I wasn't referring to the OP specifically. Just was making a more generalized statement.

With specific regards to your statement, I stand by what I wrote. This city has hundreds if not thousands of corporations that employ clerical staff. If someone cannot get such a job here I guarantee you the problem is not Dallas, it's the candidate.

I am a recruiter in the commercial construction industry. The firm I work for also has a team that just places clerical staff. Most of the candidates they work with have to come to our office for an in person assesment and a computer test (typing, MS OFFICE skills, etc.) I am continually shocked at how many people come in underdressed, unkempt, borderline illiterate and unable to speak even halfway decent english - whether born here or not.

If one cannot find a (non residential construction related) job in the 4th largest metro area in the country, one which has the strongest economy in the country, then the problem is very likely staring them back in the mirror. The unemployment rate here is a full 1 percentage point lower than the US as a whole.

To finish on topic, one who has no specific skill set and a kid needs ot be very careful about where and when they move. It's not fair to the child and it's not fair to the taxpayers in a new community.

I do appreciate the advice that has been giving. Maybe I should have been a little more specific. I'm moving to Texas because I want a change. I'm a nurse and I've already had job offers in Dallas and Houston. I just wanted to know the best area to live in around Dallas. You know not all single mother's are broke or on welfare. Some of us actually work hard to get a head and take care of our responsibilities.

you tell 'em girl!!!

Where is your job offer in Dallas? Working and having a child, I am sure you want to spend as little time commuting as possible, so I think we can make better rec's if we know where your work will be. There are great places to live ALL over DFW, so the more specific you can be with what is a priority to you (for example...safe area, good schools, kid-centric, single nightlife, close community, diversity, short communte, outdoor activities, etc) the better we can point you in the right direction.
