Hello

My family and I will be moving to Plano/Frisco area in the next couple of months and I am wondering if anyone has any advice on special education programs in either Plano or Frisco. I am blessed with a 14 year old boy who is high functioning autistic (has IQ in 70's, can read, write, do basic math,) and I am am wondering which school district would best cater to his needs. We are moving from overseas and if anyone has any advice I would be very greatful. Cheers! Domonique

FYI:

Plano kids move from one school to another between 10th and 11th grade. If you want a single school situation from now to age 21, then Frisco might be a better choice.

Thanks Pintea and FarNorthDallas-could you clarify why Plano would be better or send me an email if your reasons are private. I "forgot" to mention his brother has ADD. He is in year 11 and is doing well with some modification of work. Would Plano also be better for him? PLEASE help-I am leaving for Texas in a couple of weeks and I will only have a short time to look at schools, find a house, etc. I am loosing sleep over this move. Many, Many Thanks!
Dom

Look, I love the PISD, but...

Sorry to say, I think Plano would be a meatgrinder for the older boy. The smaller high schools of Frisco would be a better choice for someone coming in cold in grade 11.

I've been told that the former head of Plano's special ed services has moved over to Frisco, so in that area, you should see very little difference between the districts going forward.

I think Plano has been mentioned because it has the services in place and available?

You can find some information on the Plano School District website, and here
Plano ISD Council of PTAs: SAGE Archives
I've heard good things about the system, from parents of special needs children. This is at elementary school level, as my kids are younger.

Plano is a good district for kids at both ends of the spectrum - academic overachievers and more severe special needs. Average middle of the road kids can get lost and feel like a number. It is an established sophisticated district that knows how to provide services. It would be a good spot for your autistic child.

Frisco is a rapidly growing and changing district. It's fine for the average student who is not too distracted by some overcrowding, some boundary changes, some let's try this, let's try that kind of operation. Self-contained special ed classes get moved around from school to school every year - wherever there is room that's where they meet.

For your ADHD child though I don't know. My ADHD child is in a private school for kids with learning disabilities and/or ADHD. The public school was not a match for us.
