It is OFFICIALLY DOVE SEASON IN TEXAS (Sept 1st). Those sounds of guns going off you think your hearing REALLY are. The area way out there is in areas that have been hunted for decades/generations and it is still allowed. Don't need to pick up the phone and call the police about it thinking someone is running around your "quiet and peaceful" neighborhood in suburbia.

Dove season brings gun complaints | Latest News | WFAA.com (http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/wfaa/latestnews/stories/wfaa080904_lj_dove.42a346b8.html - broken link)

Just remember, they were there hunting those doves long before the house your living in was turned from pasture to cookiecutter village.

Most cities don't allow firearms discharged within city limits, but a Texas law permits their use on land that's at least 10 acres in size and at least 150 feet from a house or occupied building. Projectiles or bird shot isn't allowed to cross the property line.

Is the area, by any chance, at least 10 acres?

SH-121 and Coit area have a bunch of empty tracts of land and a riding stable near there. I dunno if there is privately owned land in between, but could be so that doesn't surprise me. My mom's up there, but not online right now and i'm not going to call her and ask if she hears gunshots, besides with her TV volume--probably not.

Privately owned land is not good enough. If it's in the city limits, it's illegal to fire off a gun.

You need to be looking for places that are unincorporated. There's one out near Sachse and Murphy... just a little wedge surrounded (mostly) by homes. Very annoying.

Not true. Yes, in many cases private land is good enough: Hunters' Gunfire Rattles City Dwellers - News Story - KXAS | Dallas

I'm a very new transplant...little less than a month. I'm right around Coit and 121 and haven't heard any gunshots - at all.

This state law trumps municipal ordinances:

LLC 229.002 Regulation of Discharge of a Firearm

that cities may NOT apply a regulation relating to the discharge of firearms or other weapons in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of a municipality or in an area annexed by the municipality after September 1, 1981, if the firearm or other weapon is: (1) a shotgun, air gun, BB gun, or bow and arrow,
(A) On a tract of land of 10 acres or more and more than 150 feet from a residence or occupied building located on another property,
(B) In a manner not reasonably expected to cause a projectile to cross the boundary of the tract, etc.

There are several outdoor gun ranges within city limits all over the DFW metro area as well.
