Hello to all. I am new to this so please take it easy on me. I am looking to move to the dallas / TX area. I currently live in NY. I been looking for jobs but with no luck. I know the market is not great right now but I was wondering if any in the area has any ideas about how to go about looking for a job. I am currently in finance but I would be open to any career / job in business / finance. Please help. I need to get out of NY. The cost of living is out of control here.

The DFW area has one of the largest concentrations of corporate headquarters in the United States. Let's put it this way, just about every major US company has a facility in the DFW area. Given that, I would look at Fortune magazines top employers to work for, pick one(s) that you are interested in, look them up online because I'm sure they all have a job search engine and apply through their sites.

Here are some businesses with national and regional headquarters in the area:

Texas Instruments, Raytheon, Alcatel Lucent, AT&T, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Nokia, Rockwell, Cisco Systems, Sprint, Verizon, CompUSA, Nortel, Research in Motion (RIM), AT&T (coming soon), Comerica Bank, Exxon Mobil, Kimberly-Clark, Fluor (engineering), Commercial Metals, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, RadioShack, Neiman Marcus, 7-Eleven, Brinker International, id Software, ENSCO Offshore Drilling, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Zales, Fossil, EDS, Frito Lay, Dr Pepper Snapple, and JCPenney.

I wiki'd this list, btw.

Good luck!

As far as looking for the job, you will want to make sure that your resume and interview skills are current. Stop by a bookstore and take a look at a few of the many books on the subjects. That being said, it is basically all about how well you come accross - your knowledge of the business, your potential impact in a possitive fashion for the company. If you seem like you are going to be productive employee rather than someone who will just need to be trained you will put yourself in a better position to get the job offer.

post your resume online and list Dallas, TX as your address. Dallas is a hot bed for jobs and most recruiters are searching the online job searches such as monster for people that are already based in Dallas.

This may help you cut in line ahead of your fellow out of towners..

Also use professional networking tools such as linkedin.com you may find that you already have someone in your sphere of influence that may be able to refer you i.e an old classmate etc..

good luck
