This is true. The winter months here are the WORST for asthma and especially children suspectible to lung infections and such. My daughter w/ asthma has more trouble in the winter months than she does all summer long. The changes are the worst. When it is cold and humid both is the worst for her (and me). In the winter months when we would head to Colorado to ski I'd always get sick. Stopped up nose, cough, hard to breathe and a REALLY bad dry throat and nose. I could not wait to get back to Dallas for SOME humidity and not to be indoors in a closed up place. In really cold environments people are cooped up all day in closed up buildings w/ others and all breathing the same recirculated air. At least here in the winter months it is nice enough to be outside for extended time periods.

Default Can't Breathe!

I live in Phoenix and have only been here for a year. I am originally from Chicago and have lived in numerous of places. Although it was once said that Phoenix was a great place for people with asthma, that is no longer so. My 2 year old had bronchitis prior to moving here and now has deveolped asthma in one year. She is constantly in and out the hospital. We had to take a trip last night!

Each year, Dallas fails to meet the clean air attainment standards set by the EPA. I know people who work at hospitals in this area who say that whenever the Air Quality Index goes to orange or red, there is a noticeable increase in reported respiratory problems. Also, Texas has a large number of coal-burning power plants, then there are the cement kilns in Midlothian, and the huge amounts of traffic... Probably not the best place if you have asthma.

Also Texas has not gotten serious about fraudulent vehicle inspection stickers and it's estimated that 700,000 cars in the area do not have proper vehicle emissions certifications. I would imagine that Phoenix has the same problem as we because of the large illegal alien influx.

I have some allergy problems in the spring and fall (drat, it usually starts during the wonderful state fair in October). But it's nothing like 'cedar fever' in Austin.
