I know two families that rent in HP. Both of them accept less than prime housing in order to get the schools and location. If you want it all you have to pay, but as you compromise the price comes down.

If you are looking for more home for your money in the area you described, I would look into WEST Plano, Sachse, or Frisco...I am not sure how far your husband's drive would be from those cities though. If you do need help finding a home, I have lots of contacts with people with integrity that will fairly and honestly help you out. Keep me posted on your search!
But the OP wanted a mostly-white area. There are too many Chinese and Indians (and even blacks) in Plano to meet that spec.

Lakewooder, Silly boy!

Did you not see where the OP wants predominately white. Surely all those minorities dilute the quality of education her children will get!

Well there is mostly-white and Ivory soap white...lol anyhow I guess you know how HP feels about Plano. I was recently called on the carpet here because Lakewood Elementary is 68% white.

Well the general rule of thumb for schools is the higher the per capita income is the better the school will be. Highland Park & Southlake are considered the creme of the crop because thats were the high income earners live plain and simple. Regardless of color those who make the most demand the most. A upper middle class neighborhood is going to have a upper level school. Poor neighorhoods on average have poor schools. Lakewood is somewhat unique because they have a mix of both but have's make sure the have nots do not bring down the average. It truly is an example of how many schools should operate. On average you get what you pay for. $1,800 a month for a 5 bedroom house is not going to get the OP in a top 10% school and those are the facts.

Have all these people who think Plano is like Vidor never BEEN up here?

For Zip Code 75093 (that's as "West Plano" as it comes):

White (includes Hispanic):81.3%
Black: 3.8%
Asian/Indian: 11.2%
+ assorted others to make 100%.

For Plano as a whole:
White 72.8%/Hispanic 10.1% = 82.9%
Black: 5.0%
Asian/Indian:9.4%

So the black folks are under-represented in the rich part, but so are the white folks! It's all those rich Asians who demand a high-test school district and know they aren't welcome in HP.

These are 2000 numbers. More recent estimates show Plano well over 15% for Asian population share.

Grainraiser--I agree with most of your comment but I do know schools that have strong % of lower-income kids where there is good education going on---LD Bell HS in HEB is one of them--top rated IB public school in TX--but don't think the ethnic composite would please the OP since Hurst and Bedford and Colleyville that feeds into Bell might not be white enough...

if safety is the issue then Hurst and Bedford North of 183 are pretty safe--we have never had any real problems with crime in the 20+ years we live here and our neighborhood is probably 85% anglo...but we don't have any 5 bedroom houses...that is going to be the kicker...
frankly for that money you won't find a house EXCEPT in areas that do have minority numbers...most Anglos don't have families that large...

If you really want the best school go for private schools. Doesn't matter where you live. Cistercian Prep School in Dallas is very very good. Catholic all boys school.
