Hi There. My husband recently had a chance for a job relocation to Arlington, TX for 12-15 months, which we have just decided to go ahead and do. I will be finishing up my grad school in North Dallas (35E/Walnut Hill Lane).

Can some one recommend the best place for us to find a house to rent. We want a newer house in a nice suburb/neighborhood. It seems that there aren't very many suburbs (from my minimal research) that are right in the middle of the two places we will need to be going. I haven't many good things about Grand Prairie, which geographically look desirable. How long of a commute would be it be from Irving to Arlington with traffic? Any suggestions would be great. I really appreciate it if anyone takes the time to answer this!

If you really want a newer home, I would suggest Mansfield or south Arlington off 360. What is your budget and home needs?

The house doesn't need to be newer per sey, just updated and modern. We are looking to spend between $1500-$2000 a month on rent.

Which one of you would be willing to make the longer commute? One of you, most likely you, could live MUCH closer to your commute destination. In your price range, your not exactly looking for the lower income areas so GP and Arlington as far as rentals are not going to be what your after, imho. You can try the North Dallas area (inside of LBJ/6-35) and be in a nice updated ranch home (Lake Highlands perhaps). Your commute then would be min. while your husband would be the one w/ the hour long commute at least. If you want to more accurately try to "split" the distance you can try Valley Ranch and the Las Colinas areas of Irving (this would be MUCH closer than Mansfield for you). This however is going to be MUCH closer of a commute for your husband and could be brutal for you at times. Your going to want to avoid ANY "far flung" suburb as either way you slice it one of you or most likely BOTH could be in for a VERY LONG and BRUTAL commute.

You're correct. I absolutely agree that Mansfield would be a long way for you. I don't know what I was thinking... Somehow I focused on the Arlington part..duh!

Grapevine would be another possibility because it would put you close to highway 360 to go to Arlington, traffic is heavy on it as well.

One more suggestion would be Lakewood (a neighborhood downtown Dallas). Your husband will be going against traffic since most people drive into Dallas and it wouldn't be too bad for you. It's a quaint area with older homes but some have been updated beautifully.

nsumner's suggestion of Grapevine looks advisable. Or a bit closer, the Hurst/Bedford/Euless area. This would give easy access to 360 to Arlington for hub and 183 into Dallas for yourself.

The inner city such as Lakewood, Uptown or Oak Lawn would be workable as well. Maybe Las Colinas, Valley Ranch or something along 114 towards Grapevine.

You won't get a newer house in Grapevine for that kind of rent, but you can get a cute, older house. PM me and I will give you the name of a good rental company in Grapevine...
