Thank you all. I am trying to do my research to line up the areas to look and areas not to even bother looking in the DFW area. I am not so much into night life and i stay home most of the time if not at work or school. Is Talty too far and is it AA friendly? Dont know much about the rural areas on the east of Dallas. I dont want to live in racially divided community, where my family will have to deal such issues. I am not looking for an all AA dominant community either; just because I am AA. I just want a community with nice people, quiet and simply safe. Any suggestions?

I would suggest you take a look at Mesquite, Garland, Rowlett or Rockwall. I'm AA and I live in Mesquite. I would suggest you look at the Creek Crossing area. The neighborhood is very diverse consisting of blacks, whites, hispanics and some folks from india. My son has true friends from all colors. Your money can go a long way in the area. 200k will get you 2500sqft or more. Garland is also very diverse. Rowlett and Rockwall may not be as diverse but you certainly would not feel out of place by any means. It really depends on were your job would be located and how much house you want.

Thank you Grainraiser. I really appreciate your input. You have given me the pros of all these areas. What are the CONS on the areas? Property Taxes? Schools?...

You mentioned family. Are you married? Kids? If so then many of the places we have listed will be just fine no matter if your AA or not. I know plenty of people that are biracial that live in these areas w/ kids and they all LOVE IT! Enjoy the community, heavily involved, kids sports, good schools, etc.

Basically these areas and not as new and shiney as the Northern burbs. They are older burbs which mean you have older neighborhoods. Some have been well maintained while others have not. My point is don't rule out a particular burb because it has older non-desirable areas. The more desirable areas will have nice schools and be safe. This is the reason they are desirable in the first place. Other than Plano most of the northern burbs are fairly new. If you would have ask someone 15 years ago you were considering moving to Allen, Frisco or McKinney they would have ask you why. These areas were fairly rural and had very little development. You would be very hard press to find folks who have been in there home for 15+ years. It's a great area because they pretty much had a chance to start from scratch. Drive thru an area during the week and on the weekend
to get a feel of the place. Your eyes will seldom lie to you.

I don't think any of the areas you mentioned are racially-divided. However, and this isn't politically correct, but it is my opinion......Talty, Forney, Rockwall, Sunnyvale and other small towns in that general area have turned into the "white-flight" neighborhoods where many white people moved to once the minority population began to grow in places like Mesquite and Garland. I don't know that I could say the same about Terrell.....it seems pretty diverse. But, even then I don't know that I would call them racially-divided. In other words, I don't think you would get any bad looks or harassment from people living there. There would just be a vast majority of white people around as opposed to being very diverse. Good luck.

Hi magyei,

I know that I am coming into this discussion a bit late, but my only advice would be to not exclude any particular area before you get an opportunity to come down and visit. The Dallas-Fort Worth area is quite large and has a plentiful amount of nice areas. I am sure that you will be able to find something suitable here.

All the best!

I was thinking investing in a home at this time when the housing market has cooled off and interest rates at it lowest was good idea.
Employment in Texas is so much better than the rest of the country although it is slowing down some. You have gotten good advice on renting now. It is very much a buyers market like most of the country. If you were to buy now and decide to move, it would be difficult to get your money back out. So renting is the best answer for now. Thank you for your service to our country. When you return, probably at DFW, hope it will be a time that I am there.
