I am looking to buy a house in Plano on the East Side of 75. I am looking for a neighborhood that does not have a mandatory HOA that is around $200k. An older neighboorhood is fine as long as it is safe for my small kids. Does anyone have any recommendations? Any neighborhoods I should avoid? Is there a web-site with crime statistics by area in Plano? Thanks!

Go out towards Murphy. You will probably have to look into some of the older neighborhoods as most new ones will have some form of an HOA. If you like the east side of 75 don't limit yourself to just Plano city limits. Look in Murphy, Richardson and Garland. Out in that one area they all intermingle w/ each other. You may find a house that is in the Richardson city limits but Plano ISD or Garland city limits and Richardson ISD, etc. The price range is what is going to limit you. If you are trying to avoid an HOA because of not wanting a neighborhood pool/clubhouse and such you can find some that don't have those amenities and the dues will be much lower. There are plenty of neighborhoods that are swarming w/ kids so that will not be a problem at all.

The schools in Plano out on the East side are not consistent. I agree with Mom, East of the 75 I like Murphy, Firewheel and Richardson near Breckenridge Park. If 200k is your price range and you want better Plano schools, go into the Central are around Russell Creek. 200k may be doable there as well.

In that price range, you may want to also look at Craig's Ranch in Mckinney and East Frisco. Both are excellent areas with good schools, but those two have a bit more of a commute (always a trade-off).
