Dallas, then Grapevine , then Houston, then San Antonio.

I'm not sure I could live in San Antonio. Well, for enough money I could... but it would have to be an armored truck full.

Sounds fair. By the same token, we Dallasites should stay out of the Houston, Austin and SA forums.

Yeah, sure. Why should someone seriously care about the stated whims of just a handful of people who all claim their hometown is the best place to live.

Houston has way to much humidity for me. I track humidity rates with a digital meter in my back yard and typical in a hot Dallas suburban summer is less than 40% relative humidity ( excluding rainy periods when it's higher). Not sure how San Antonio stacks up in this regard.

Um... howabout none of the above? If you are saying BEST TEXAS city it can't be a closed ended question with just 3 cities. I like Dallas and San Antonio, I'll bite my tongue on Houston and spare that useless debate. Austin is the best.

-Great skyline and rapidly expanding.
-Prettiest topography
-Lower crime rates than the other big 3.
-An interesting downtown that has character and is pedestrian friendly (although Fort Worth and San Antonio could be debated in this realm)
-Austin is the capital of Texas and center of the states politics which secures it's prosperity to a certain degree

If you're looking for a BIG city, there's really no reason to pick Dallas over Houston.

Crime... etc. Thanks for your input.
If I had to break down into categories,

Weather: San Antonio- Houston is warm and humid. Dallas is not a city that is warm all year round like Houston and San Antonio. Dallas doesn't have Chicago and Green Bay winters but they still have winter. They don't get a lot of snowfall but they do have their share of freezing rain, hail and cold winds.

Schools: Dallas - one of the best cities in the country for public schools. So they are not just the best in Texas but arguably top 10 or even top 5 for public schools in the country

Livability: Tied between all 3 - the cost of living in Texas cities is very affordable. I don't really think any of these three truly beats the other in this category

Cosmopolitan: Houston - in my opinion, it's the largest city in Texas that has the most "northern" like feel. You don't feel like you are in Texas. People don't speak with the same heavy drawl that they do in Dallas. It's more Catholic than Baptist so it has less of the Evangelical presence. They have a lot more African Americans, Asians and other ethnicities than Dallas.

Crime (lowest crime): Dallas is the best in my opinion.

If it were up to me, I would choose Houston though. I still prefer the cosmopolitan vibe of Houston. Houston has more Fortune 500 companies and headquarters than Dallas. And it's the energy capital of the country with a lot more high paying executive jobs although Dallas' job market is more diverse than Houston. I also prefer cities that warm all year round. Dallas definitely has a winter season.

But based on your post- I would recommend Dallas
