My wife and I are moving to Dallas shortly (probably within the next month or so). We are in the process of learning the areas and looking to buy a home. No areas are ruled out, but we seem to be focusing on Allen, Richardson (northeast part), and Plano. But, I also want to see about Grapevine, Southlake, etc. Can someone provide a real estate agent that is willing to put in the time to help us understand the areas before we feel comfortable buying? And what are your thoughts/experiences using discount real estate agents? I'm going to work downtown Dallas, so commuting is a big issue, as well as schools (oldest in kindergarten).

Finally, I'm also not real sure how to go about checking into mortgage companies. Anyone have any great recommendations on getting a loan?

Thanks for your help!

As always, please make sure your real estate recommendations are made using PM.

Thank you!

I sent you a PM, but wanted to comment on mortgages.
Please apply/ talk to at least 2 mortgage companies and get a GFE (Good faith estimate) from both. Be wary of online mortgage companies that offer "to Good to be true" deals, because they usually are. Most of the time the fees or higher interest rate will show up at the closing table, and it is a little too late to change mortgage companies.
I recommend getting a list from your Realtor or using your bank. Now is a great time to purchase or just refinance.
