We are a young family (early 30s with small kids) in Mesquite who like traditional worship (organ and hyms) as opposed to contemporary worship (band and choruses). Are we alone?

We prefer either Baptist or Methodist. We have found a Methodist church that is mostly traditional and we really like it, but it is 99.9% older folks and there are very few new members joining, so I am worried about the stability of the church. Are there any other younger folks out there who prefer traditional worship or are we a dying breed? Does anyone else share my frustration?

jp, which Methodist Church have you tried?

First United Methodist in Mesquite has a traditional service at 11 on Sunday...it's been around since 1863 (it's older than the city of Mesquite) and isn't going anywhere...

We tried First United. They are ok, but because of several factors they just weren't right for us.

I have also found that churches that do 1 contemporary and 1 traditional service each week seem to have inner conflict between members that want to stay traditional and those that want to go contemporary 100%.

I am wondering if a church can survive these days doing 100% traditional worship.

We're in our early 40s with a young child. About 10 years ago, the contemporary service trend came to Methodist churches in our area. We went to one for a while just because we were lazy and it was a Saturday night service! They also had a good program for our son.

While I often liked the sermon content, I just couldn't take the music. I prefer hymns that don't try to be cool as opposed the Jesus Lite Rock of the contemporary service. I like Christian music (hymns) and I like rock music (alternative) but disaster almost always results when the two meet. I like singing things that were written in the 1700s. There is a real sense of history there. And I really like rituals like repeating the church responses ("Thanks be to God," etc.)

We are a very liberal church with lots of people of all ages-lots of young families, teens, people in their 40s-80s. Frankly I'm often surprised that we have any elderly people at all. Our pastor often talks about very bold ideas for a Christian church. Our church has started a contemporary service but we will probably rarely attend as we like going on Sundays and it is also a Saturday night service.

Offering lots of good enrichment, participation, activities for the teens and kids is a sure way to attract younger families. Also, our more liberal pastor and congregation probably attract younger people. I do know Methodists have an older congregation on the whole. I hope this denomination doesn't die out. I love it.
