You don't pay sales tax-just registration. Also your license comes pretty quickly -I had mine in less than a week-I was able to use an out of state check to pay mine as well-guess it depends who serves you. Just bring all your paperwork with you-not that confusing-out of state license, birth certificate or passport-social security card-insurance and two things that verify you are a Texas resident-if you are a green card holder you need to take that as well

The base registration fee in Texas is $50.75 plus $1 for TexasSure, the electronic insurance verification program, and $1 for improvements to the registration and titling computer system. So, total state registration is $52.75 but counties may add other fees to this cost. As a new resident, you also will pay sales tax-related fees required by the state's Comptroller of Public Accounts. Sales tax fees on a vehicle can be $90 or the difference between your previous state's sales tax and the Texas sales tax.

Wow, I had a really simple and easy time doing mine. Got my registration, took that a couple days later to get my license, and they accepted my WV license and registration as ID. I had my BC and social and all that but they didnt need it. They gave me a temp license and that was it. Took about 5 minutes not including the wait, which was not that bad. I have had much worse experiences in VA, WV and CA. The prices are great, no problems there. Yes you pay more for registration, compared to $25 in WV, but there you ALSO pay personal property tax on your car every year, and that can be hundreds of dollars a year. So, no complaints out of me!

Wow, that's crazy, to have to pay sales tax on a car you are bringing in as a new resident. Guess who's keeping her Oregon registration? The car is registered to a corporation I own in Oregon, so the fact that I have a Texas driver's license won't "flag" anything. I'll get insurance in Texas for the car I own in Oregon, and be done with it.

Is it possible and legal to leave my car registered out of state under an immediate relatives address until the registration and inspection stickers expire, but in the meantime switch to a TX driver license using a valid and legal TX address?

Default My bad

You do pay sales tax but it was only $90 for us-I think people mistake that with the excise or property tax we have assessed on cars from states like MA and I think CA has it too-which can be really high (for us it was $1000 on two cars!) Any how in response to getting license without registering your car-your have to register your car first before getting your TX license-they ask you if you own/registered your car in TX. I believe you have to sign a form saying you don't own a car. If by some chance you get your TX license without registering your car and you get pulled over by the police you could get yourself into a little trouble! I say this because we changed our insurance on our cars effective the day we arrived in TX-we believed we had to wait 30days to establish residency before registering our cars-in the meantime my husband was pulled over by the police-we had out of state tags and license but TX insurance-we got a notice saying we had 30 days to get our TX licenses and car registered in TX or we would face a fine-we got our registration the next day and licenses done a few days later.
