We also looked at Preston Hollow vs Park Cities. Actually, it wasn't a very difficult choice or one that took too long. While we did love the bigger lots in Preston Hollow (we used to live on 2 acres at our old house), the school issue was a huge sticking point for us. We didn't want to be obligated to choose private school. I also like having my kids in the community schools--that's important to us. I like the feeling of "community" that engenders and that my kids can ride their bikes to schools with the neighbors or that their friends live so close and I am not driving all over Dallas for playdates. Yes, you can definitely get more house for your money in Preston Hollow, but you also have City of Dallas services (much worse city services) for a higher price. We have EXCELLENT city services (people joke about them being like a concierge service) and a lower tax rate than Dallas. As far as the "keeping up with the Jones"...we actually found that was much more of an issue in other areas of the metroplex and way less so here.

What is the difference between Old Preston Hollow and 'new' Preston Hollow? If anyone knows.

Yes, Old PH is within the boundaries of the old town of Preston Hollow, which the city of Dallas annexed in 1945. Old PH's boundaries are Northwest Hwy to the south, Midway to the west, Preston to the east, and Walnut Hill to the north. It is also known as the "Estate section" of PH as that's where the multiple-acre estates are.

PH as a real estate term, generally refers to the whole area between Midway and 75, starting at Northwest Hwy. The old north border was Walnut Hill, then got pushed to Royal. I am now seeing everything south of LBJ called PH to capitalize on the name's cache. It's kind of like NYC where the Upper East Side's northern border extended from 86th St to 96th Street over the past 20 years and now realtors are trying to push the northern border into the lower 100's. As with NYc, there aren't any city service changes as the border pushes north. In the Park Cities, there are obvious town limits over which HPISD/ HP & UP fire/police/taxes can't be extended.

I would pick the Park Cities - no question.

Highland Park and University Park are the #1 addresses in DFW.

Those two cities are like the Boardwalk and Park Place neighborhoods in monopoly. They are the most sought after, most expensive - and the best in DFW period. If you are a wealthy person looking to send your kids to great (and also wealthy) schools ... don't think twice about it. =)

My understanding is that most families in Preston Hollow choose private school for their kids. How common is it for the famlies in PH to choose the public schools (PH/Walnut Hill/Kramer elementaries for example)?

Not too common, but they don't realize what they're missing.

More common for elementary schools than middle & high school. 4 of the 5 Elementary schools feeding to Hillcrest are Exemplary-rated (Pershing, Preston Hollow, Kramer & Rogers). Adams, Whithers, and Degolyer elementaries are in the nicer (as in more expensive real estate) part of the area that feeds into WT White HS and all are rated Exemplary, as are 3 of the other 5 elemetnaries that feed into White. Walnut Hill Elementary is also Exemplary, but feeds into TJ HS, which has a fairly weak feeding pattern from the other elementaries. The Exemplary DISD montessori school, Dealey, is also located in PH and serves the entire district (by application). You see many yard signs supporting all of these schools in Preston Hollow & surrounding neighborhoods.

Around 4th-6th grade, public school attendance falls of a cliff, as many families choose to bypass Hillcrest HS(Unacceptable) and TJ HS (Acceptable). More neighborhood families choose White HS (Recognized- the only DISD HS to earn the 2nd Highest TEA rating. No HS's have earned the Exemplary rating) if they live within its borders (generally, between Walnut Hill & LBJ, west of Inwood to I-35, also includes part of Addison).

There are also an abolute TON of private school kids in PH & surrounding neigbhorhoods as well since so many schools are in that general area.

Dallas, TX Schools Newsweek Rankings for Top High Schools in America (top 1,600 out of 22,000 in the country):

1 Talented and Gifted Dallas TX
4 Science/Engineering Magnet Dallas TX
38 Highland Park Dallas TX
114 Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts Dallas TX
154 Judge Barefoot Sanders Magnet Center for Public Service Dallas TX
222 School of Business and Management Dallas TX
303 White Dallas TX
333 Hillcrest Dallas TX
436 Woodrow Wilson Dallas TX
672 Lake Highlands Dallas TX

I believe Hillcrest tanked on TAKS rankings because a sub-group had too many drop-outs. Correct me if I am wrong. Its district has been changed because of the opening of Conrad High in Vickery Meadows about three years ago. I think it got some of the former TJ district in exchange. In any case, White and Hillcrest have noted AP programs to serve "greater" Preston Hollow.

If residents in Preston Hollow would grow some cajones and send their kids to these public schools, the school ratings would probably skyrocket.

Nothing hurts these DISD schools more than white flight, and in PH's case, white flight is hiding your kids behind private school walls. There's no reason in an area like PH for the public schools to be bad on any level. It's their own fault.
