My husband and I are looking at houses, and trying to figure out if M Street areas are right for us or not. If we're looking at that area, what parts should we avoid? Are some parts of the "M Streets" better than the others? Many of the houses have detached garages...is that a safety issue at night going from the garage back to your house?

If you live somewhere where you're scared to walk from your detached garage to your house, I don't really think having an attached garage is making you a whole lot safer!

Debsi makes a good point. Having said that I really don't think there is an area to avoid in the M Streets because of safety.

Now, if you wish to cut down on noise, you might avoid the 5600 and 5700 blocks Martel, Longview, McCommas, Goodwin, and Vickery.

I've heard people say to avoid some parts of M streets, which is why I ask...like south of Henderson/lower Greenville. Are there similar boundaries to the north and east?

south of Henderson isn't M streets, that's why. Look on a map, and you will see the streets names starting with "M" - that will be the giveaway. south of Mockingbird, North of Henderson/Belmont, east of Central Expwy, and west of Abrams (because the streets between Abrams and Skillman need to belong somewhere, and it isn't Lakewood). But, yes the M streets are safe - all around. Pretty much anything south of mockingbird between Central Expwy and White Rock Lake will be safe.

Also, the area south of Henderson is getting heavily gentrified. Much of it is all the way down to Fitzhugh.

This is kind of splitting hairs but the area generally referred to as the M Streets is the Greenland Hills neighborhood. Which has McCommas as its northern boundary. I believe Ridgedale or Vanderbilt serve as the southern boundary with Greenville and 75 serving as the east and west boundaries.. But, as I said that is splitting hairs and is not terribly important. In general, the area in my opinion is very safe

I went to daycare at the corner of Greenville and Winton (old house that got torn down) back in the late 70's and this part of town seemed abandoned to a certain degree compared to today. nostalgia aside, fast forward 20 years I moved back to McCommas and Bremen for 5 years - never knew it was called Greenland Hills the whole time.

M-streets are safe. And in my opinion, south of the M-streets (Vickery Place) is very safe too. That whole area is very nice. I lived in that area and loved it! You always see people enjoying their neighborhood (walking, jogging, walking their dogs, kids playing). I really enjoyed living there and being close to Greenville avenue (shops, restaurants, bakeries) and the Knox/Henderson area. Not to mention being so close to the Katy Trail.
Good luck on your move!

It is a safe area, don't worry about it. If you are scared get a CCW permit and carry a gun. Also learn to use the gun appropriately. It might save your life.

Trust me, you will feel SIGNIFICANTLY safer if you carry a gun.
