I'm white and my wife's black; we have two kids. We are relocating to Dallas from Denver. I will be working in Las Colinas. I am looking for a good area to raise my family. We are looking in the low to mid 200's in purchase price, limited commute, great schools, newer homes.

So far I've had trouble pinpointing an area. It's confusing as there seems to be a number of great areas that connect to horrible areas. Lots of bad "pockets". (denver is pretty easy: throw a dart at the south metro suburbs and it is most likely safe with good schools)

Thank you in advance.

Where in Dallas will you be working? If you have some concerns about Las C. have you thought about Coppell? I don't know if the price range will work for you. Also Addison, (but they do not have a lot of single family homes) Carrollton and Farmers Branch are close in. If you want to go a little furthere, what about Grapevine? I mention all these areas as they have good to very good school districts.

I am sure others will have ideas as well.

I would concentrate my search in Coppell, Valley Ranch, Hurst/Euless/Beford and Flour Mound.

Most places in that area should be OK. I would avoid anything in Irving ISD. As far as the biracial thing, nobody in Dallas is going to blink an eye. This is 2009, not 1969.

Most of Addison is in the Dallas school district and I would think long and hard before doing that. A small portion of Addison is in Carrollton-Farmers Branch school district.

All the places above are great and would put you in a close proximity to your work but you will not find any new homes in your price range. You may find a couple in Grapevine built around 2000-2002. You would have to prioritize the age of the home vs the commute time.

You can buy a very nice house in Flower Mound, with excellent schools and a not-too-terrible commute time, for about $225K to $250K.

We looked in Las Colinas / Valley ranch when we first moved down.
We decided against buying there because the houses and lots tended to be much smaller and priced much higher than other areas. We ended up buying in Carrollton for the schools but Copell is nice as well. Carrollton will give you more sq feet for your money but the homes are generally older (1980's or thereabouts).
Have you considered renting for a few months while you sort out where exactly you want to live?
As to being a biracial family - no worries there. The area is very racially diverse and most people won't think about it twice.
