Good points about renting, and in fact, that is what DH wants to do - rent for six months and get a feel for the different areas. On the other hand, I think it's important to take advantage of market conditions *now.*

But I also will be job hunting and it would be nice to settle in a location that's convenient (relatively) for both of us, so renting will make sense in the short term. However, in my experience, there's not much "freedom" to renting. We have dogs, so that's an issue. And it seems like you're always fighting with a landlord about painting the walls or maintenance. Definitely not a long-term solution for us.

Market conditions? You are moving from outside DFW. The DFW market didn't have the quick rise and subsequent fall. It's been basically flat here the last 2 years. Some pockets of rising, some pockets of lowering... I think Collin County had a slight decrease of 2-3 percent... but that's not much at all.

The last time I was at Zillow looking at prices on homes in Collin and Dallas counties... the prices on the website seemed heavily inflated. So perhaps the taxes are too?

Good point - these are 2008 levels. Wonder if they are going down for 2009? Does that ever happen? I have older friends from Florida who sold out and moved to OK because their (paid for) house was costing them more than $1500 a month in taxes. Needless to say they sold it for far, far less than the county assessed.
