There is no mention (repeat: NO mention) of Texas!
We haven't broken any records because 1980 still holds the highest temperatures at least for the past several days anyway. It looks like a cool down is coming and right now, 93-98 is looking pretty good.

Also, looking at highcotton's map, I never knew it reached 100F in South Dakota, at least not in June!
South Dakota does not usually see triple digits in June (although it does happen) but come July and August, the upper midwest can definitely see triple digit heat including the Dakotas.

It ain't just Texas that gets hot! Check out the forecast high of 107 in Tennessee...and 104 in North Carolina.

We just moved here from the Tampa Bay area of FL...I thought I knew what hot was, especially seeing as we have the humidity to deal with, but in no way shape or form was I prepared for this kind of heat! Any suggestions how to keep the house a bit cooler? (I did not have time to read through all the posts, there are almost 200!) Would an indoor portable A/C unit help at all?

You'll find that DFW has lower humidity than what you had in Tampa. I suggest starting a new thread to ask about keeping your house cooler.

Live Surface Heat Index Map

It's about 20 degrees cooler in DFW than it is in northern Virginia...and many other places.
