My husband and I are excited to be moving into our first house at end of August. We will be buying nearly all new furnishings for the house as we have only apartment-grade furnitures right now. However, I'm a little stumped as how to decorate my living room. I've been watching too much HGTV, I guess, because I really want the "wow" factor for my living room. I know what I like when I see it, something contemporary, bright and fresh, but I don't have the know-how of putting it together. I'd like to enlist the help of a interior decorator or designer but I am on a budget as this is our first and starter home. The living room is modest at about 18' x 17'. The layout is not easy to work with for a novice, it has high slanted ceiling with tall windows. How do I go about finding the right professional to help me?? I've done a little research but was daunted be the design-for-a-mansion portfolios. Anyone with the design styles and creativities of Vern Yip and Candice Olson in North Texas? I like the idea of paying a lump sum for a project rather than paying hourly. I've thought about just hiring a designer for couple hours of consulting at my house who'll just help me with coming up with a plan but I also like the idea of having the room all done up by a professional if I can afford it. Help and advice please!!

Congrats on your new house! I'm a HGTV junkie as well and unfortunately my head is always swimming with too many ideas from it

I think your cheapest avenue would be a designer. They could sketch out and advise but you would do the actual work.

Unfortunately I don't know of anyone that does that But maybe you could also try "stagers"? Just a thought.........

Another possibility is a feng shui consultant. They work hourly and can advise you on room layout and colors. The one I hired when I was selling my house made some fabulous suggestions that made my house look much better with the existing furniture, although I did buy a few small pieces to follow her suggestions.

Some furniture stores also have design consultants, if you have a particular store that you like you could ask there. I know I spoke with a designer at Ethan Allen when looking at living room furniture. The downside is they will probably be limited to what they sell.

I would call UNT. They have an Interior Design program. Get one of the students that is near graduation.
