I may potentially be moving to the Dallas area from Northern Califonia with my family (wife, 3 yr old and one due in December). I would be commuting to Garland, and am looking for a family oriented suburb with a
good public school system. I have heard of Flower Mound and Rockwall but am not familiar with either location. Any help on where to start this search would be greatly appreciated.

Flower Mound would be a long commute. Rockwall would be reasonable. It's a nice area, family-oriented, good schools.

What part of Garland? It's a pretty healthy foot print. The south end is served by 30 and 635 which would make Rockwall not a bad commute. But the north end is served by SH190 which would make Rockwall a longer commute for the next couple of years. They are extending 190 which will help a lot depending on where in Rockwall you'd end up.

South End of Garland, closer to 30 and 635. Any idea what the property taxes are in Rockwall ?

A conservative way to figure property taxes here are about 2.0% of the assesed value. I live in Plano and my house is almsot assesed at 180 k and my taxes are around $3600 annually.

I believed property tax in Rockwall is 2.8%. Check out Lakeside Village subdivision right off I 30 and Horizon exit. I gave Rockwall both thumbs up.

I never heard of Plano with 2% property taxes.

Compared to California, the bad schools here would be considered good. Also, 'good' is relative, any reference points to what you are looking for (something comparable to Cupertino, Palo Alto, Saratoga, etc.)?

These are the local Property Appraisal office links with property tax information and search of properties and their taxes:

Dallas Central Appraisal District
Rockwall Central Appraisal District
Kaufman County Appraisal District
Welcome to the Collin Central Appraisal District

These are for the counties you are potentially looking at. There are others.

Good luck on the home search.
