I'm not confusing anything. I went to private school in Dallas and I know many people that attended St. Marks who were as sharp as a bag of marbles.
I did not attend any of those schools but this is the first I have heard that Woodrow is more highly-regarded academically than White or Hillcrest. All three I think are about equal in terms of their makeup and results, certainly their TEA rankings. I think all three are only "Academically Acceptable."

I think the big difference is that a lot of people in Lakewood are supportive of public schools whereas Preston Hollow people are not.
As someone who lives in the Hillcrest cluster area, I agree with this. There are some public school supporters over here, but not as many as over in Lakewood. It's a shame.

Hillcrest does have its avid supporters, but there are a lot of folks around there who feel they must have a private school sticker for their SUV. Which seems to reinforce the old stereotypes we in East Dallas have always had about North Dallas Hillcrest did slip off the Newsweek Best School list this year while Woodrow and White remained on the list. It may be an information snafu and/or the attendance zone has been changed drastically with the opening of Conrad High and phasing in parts of Thomas Jefferson High feeder schools. Hillcrest seems to still have its share of top kids -- we shall see about football when we play them in a few weeks!

A good example of the Lakewood support for public schools is the upcoming Lakewood Home Tour, which draws nearly 400 volunteers each year. The tour earns over $100,000 for Lakewood Elementary, J.L. Long Middle School and Woodrow Wilson High School. The opening night party is one of the social events of the year - it's at Lakewood Country Club but never serious - last year's theme was "Lakewood Love Boat" and this year it will be based on "Caddyshack"!

The money is being channeled for the International Baccalaureate Programme for Woodrow, then Long, then Lakewood for the next few years.

Hillcrest/Franklin have a fundraiser every year that is attending by, well, Hillcrest/Franklin and cluster parents. Most of the neighbors simply don't care and I think there are many who just wish our schools would go away, though they'd never verbalize that to their middle class friends who are utilizing these schools. Just something I suspect after years of VERY carefully worded comments from people. To have the community spirit and dedication to the schools that y'all have over in Lakewood has been the dream of many for years over here in my neck of the woods.

As for football, it ain't lookin' too good! WTW beat Hillcrest last Friday.

I remember how one of the Hillcrest kids at my church used to ask "why do you love that old school so much? It looks like a castle".

We would ask "why is it that you Hillcrest people always want to hang out with us?"

Plus, you get to live in a $1 million house for "free".

In general, I am a non-fan of HP. I find the almost complete exclusion of black people disturbing. But I think the OP would be very happy there.
Not one to carry the flag but is there 'racial steering' going on? Are Blacks excluded or is it like most wealthy enclaves meaning if you've got the scrilla (street cred term for money) you'll be welcomed as long as you're not there to make waves.

I don't live in HP. I think your comment is absurd. People with means desire a degree of economic segregation. Pretense implies they are faking things. Some do most do not.

Typically, a great way for a new Dallasite to get in is to show up just before school begins in the fall. Every year a kid or two moves away. A kid or two will commit and then renege and go to another private school or public school.

They both deny it - but Jesuit and Ursuline will always make a spot for deserving (deserving meaning grades, ISEE etc.) catholic school kids who move in at the last minute. I've seen it happen multiple times.

Right now all of these schools are full plus waiting lists for Fall 2011. A new kid can supplant a wait listed kid in a heartbeat.
