In short: my sister-in-law's boyfriend collects SSDI/SSI for schizophrenia. Needless to say, money is extremely tight. He wants to put in an application for disabled housing w/the DHA because the wait list is supposedly shorter than the usual two years, and because senior/disabled are the only people currently allowed to apply for any housing programs here in Dallas. However, he was recently told by somebody who (supposedly) used to work w/DHA that his disability doesn't count because it's not a physical disability. I can understand that if that's the case - I assumed disabled housing would be more for people w/wheelchairs and whatnot for better access - but if the government has labeled him disabled and he collects a check for this, is it legal for him to be turned away from a program for disabled Dallasites because he's not disabled enough ?
