Hello,
my husband is african american, and i'm hispanic. He has a Master's degree in engineering and we'd like to relocate to Texas but don't know where. His job is in McKinney. We're from L.A. and we're tired of traffic and being in a place that is so populated so, we're looking for a country area. I've done research on the school districts and the population and well, i've noticed there's hardly any african americans living in the small towns. But I'd like to know if anyone knows how's the climate out there in both as weather and how we'd be received-being that we're a mixed race. We have children as well and well, we'd like to buy a place where they would be free to run and enjoy themselves but i again, wouldn't like to live in the city.

Can anyone provide me with any information of Whiteright, Wolfe City, Celeste, Merit, and Farmersville? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Happy day!

To be honest, I would suggest you consentrate on McKinny. It will still seem small to you after living in Los Angeles and the schools are very good.

The cities you listed have very, very few minorities. McKinney is last good size surburb from Dallas going north. If your husband works in McKinney living in McKinney would be the way to go. As long as your not making the trip to Dallas often traffic would not be a concern. The city has great schools and a minority population. The only smaller community in the area with any size minority population would be Sherman. Someone here should be able to chime end with the distance involved in that commute. You could go with McKinney or Allen to put down roots. Mixed couples here are so common that they hardly draw any attention.

I'd stay in McKinney or Dallas, like was already said. Some of these country boys think your husband would look better dragging behind a truck. Anyway, bet of luck with the move! :-)

I hate to say it, but stay away from small TX towns. African Americans and Hispanics are marginalized and completely rejected in small town TX. People will have nothing to do with you. Stick with are more populated, and progressive, part of Dallas.

I would recommend staying closer to McKinney because this area has so much to offer. No need to create a long commute when it's very good close to work.

Towns like McKinney, Fairview, Plano, Parker, Murphy and Allen tend to have high numbers of college-educated and graduate degree residents and folks cool on diversity. Even though you are a minority couple, you shouldn't feel like you'll be treated poorly because you fall into a small demographic percentage for the neighborhood. We tend to play well with other hard-working, white-collar, educated folk. In other words, those that live lifestyles similar to ours. Your husband will get a house-hunting trip? Come out and drive around. I agree that compared to L.A., the neighborhoods here will feel much more spacious.

The small towns you listed are somewhat insular and I wouldn't recommend moving in as a mixed-race minority family. Yeah, a little bubba-ish. They may dislike you because you're from California.

The weather is somewhat seasonal, with very hot, HUMID summers and cool winters. It's not uncommon to get ice storms in the winter. Maybe 1-2 times per season. But it's generally not really cold. We stay above freezing most of the time.

Small towns in Texas are not much different than anywhere else.

It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from or what state you are moving to, moving to a small town (not suburb, but a real town) is a terrible idea.

In a small town, everyone knows everyone else (within one or two connections), so if you just move in, you will be treated as an outsider until the next generation because at that point, your family will be a local.

A mostly-white small town would be even worse for you. A mostly-black small town (more common east of Texas) is so poor you wouldn't want to drive through it in a nice car, let along live there. It is really bizarre how many decades in the past small towns are, but they like it that way, so fine.

Re your family, in a suburb like Allen or Frisco, no one is going to care because they are all from somewhere else; they are homogenous and bland if you don't mind that.

McKinney is established enough for you to like, and if your husband works there, living in the same area is a huge advantage for you on top of everything else.

That is so not true. I live in a small town and this isn't happening here. You'll find your nut cases anywhere who are still living in the 50s and 60s, but my small-town Texas is just fine with African Americans and Hispanics.

Nowadays many of the people living in small towns have moved there from the big cities to get out of the rat race. I'm one of them, and I'm far from "country."
