My husband is a semi driver in Michigan. (owner operator) We USED to deliver auto parts but that is declining and there is not much left in michigan to haul without going over the road. We were looking at Texas. Is trucking still a large industry in Texas or is it declining as in Michigan? We are looking for a rental house in a middle to upper class area in the Dallas Fort worth area. Schools are extremely important as we have kids. I read a post mentioning Euless but times are changing quickly, is that still a good place to look? Any other suggestions? Has anyone moved from the metro detroit area to the dallas fort worth area recently that wouldn't mind sharing some tips? thanks!!

We don't have the 15% unemployment like Detroit does, but ours is close to 10%, so there are a lot of people looking for work and competition is tough.

DFW's trucking industry is very busy, and the big companies are hiring lots of drivers. HOWEVER, the pay is pretty low, like $12 hourly for a CDL driver, and the drivers often have to work on the docks, too. In order to stay alive in the recent economy, the companies basically undercut each others' prices until they reached rock bottom. So, they are hauling lots of loads, but they aren't making any money doing it. Most of the truck depots are around Euless/DFW Airport, and in Irving (off Irving Blvd.)

What is your budget for housing?

If he has a CDL & can't find good work, try Ben E. Keith Beers in Dallas. I worked there for years before going back to school and the pay is top notch, the benefits good and the retirement program the best. It's hard work but I'm sure he could handle it.

As an owner operator the opportunities for a good job are less than for a company driver in DFW. But there are alot of opportunities. As for neighborhoods I recommend Coppell, and Weatherford. Alot of drivers are rock-haulers in the area, and they seem to be doing good.
