Hi everyone,

My family and I are moving to the US in the next few months, due to a new position I have successfully applied for. I have been using this website and many others to prepare myself for the move, and to make sure the transition is smooth.

The company I work for will (hopefully) be helping a lot with the majority of the paperwork. In the meantime, one of the key things I need help with recommendations for a location to live. I am hoping to rent for about a year (12 month lease with option to extend), and all going well, possibly look at purchasing a home after we have settled into life in our new home city.

Our requirements would be:

* 3 or 4 bedroom home, in a quiet, safe, and "family orientated" neighbourhood
* A shopping centre nearby (within 5 miles)
* Within a short commute to Richardson (that's where I will be working)

Can any seasoned Dallas residents give me some thoughts and recommendations?

Richardson itself will be perfect for you. :-)

Default Canyon Creek in Richardson

Check out the Canyon Creek area of Richardson. It's a nice stable neighborhood with lots of mature trees. Good school district (Richardson), shopping is close by and it is a rocks throw from "Telecom Corridor" which is probably where your office is. Hope this helps.

You could look at Plano. It meets all your requirements perfectly.

I work for an Austrlian company here and all of my coworkers are Aussies. They are the coolest people I know. Welcome to Dallas!

Thanks for all your replies, really appreciate it. I'll take a closer look at the areas you've recommended! We haven't moved as yet, and just in the initial phase of the transfer, but I am really looking forward to it. Will keep you posted.

There can never be too many Aussies in the Metroplex. Welcome!

Though coming from Sydney -- one of my favorite cities on the planet -- you're probably going to miss the ocean and the entire beach culture.

What others have said so far in terms of neighborhoods seems right though you might also check out the Lake Highlands area of Dallas; some parts of LH are in the Richardson school district. It's a nice neighborhood with some character on the north side of White Rock Lake.

Thanks again for everyone's advice. I am adding all the locations to a list, so I can start looking around these neighbourhoods once we arrive. I'll be arranging some temporary accommodation for a few months, so that we can look at the areas you are all suggesting in person, to get a feel for them and make a decision.

A small update: Just submitted my visa applications, and am now updating tax and other paperwork so I can be ready when the visa is finalised. Wish me luck

Also consider Murphy. Lots of diversity, so your kids will fit right in and not be worried about being "different."

Murphy borders Richardson at the eastern edge, attends Plano schools on the west side and Wylie schools on the east. VERY family friendly.

Firewheel Mall is close by, but we've got pretty easy access to Collin Creek, the Villages at Allen/Fairview and Watters Creek. Plus plenty of grocery stores, home improvement, restaurants, etc close by.

Best of luck and welcome to Texas. Sydney to Dallas: now THAT's a change. Good luck..fortunately, Houston's only a few hours by car if you want to experience an actual city.
