If you don't mind me asking, what can someone make as a science/math teacher out here ? This sounds like a nice pre-retirement transition job for a former engineer tainted to the ways of Corporate America.

Socketz, if you check the local school district websites, they usally give the salaries for teachers. I know in the Austin area they average about 38 or 39k for first year teachers and slightly more if you have your masters degree. Also you might want to check if that district considers Math/science teachers high demand, if so then they will usaully give pretty nice stipend.

Wait, I sat by a Football coach on a plane that said a good HS coach can make 60-70k. And that the Southlake coach clears 6 figures. Is there really this much of a delta....that's sad. How can schools compete with private industry for these people at those salaries ?

I have heard that coaches make like two to three times what teachers do. Sad but true Texas stereotype number one, H.S. Football is a religion.

As for getting a job as a teacher you must be certified in the state of Texas in the area you want to teach. Most of the larger districts do not hire someone without certification and without experience. My recommendation is for anyone wanting to teach to go the university route to become certified. Alternative certification is a much more difficult route to get a job in most districts. Alt cert programs promise a job but in reality they only get you through certification ... you are on your own to get a job that will help you continue to get completely certified. My ex and many people I know will tell you that this isn't the route to go. They were all told unless you have experience or are university trained we can't look at you for our openings. He was a math undergrad and worked in the corporate world for over 20 years.

yes... the salary for a teacher is pitiful. I have 21 years experience and just make about $6000 more than a beginning teacher. This is an insult to our profession. I don't have a problem with young teachers making quality money as we need quality teachers and this is the only way we are going to get them. I just have a problem with not making a fair amount of money in comparison for my years experience.

Coaches do make more money than classroom teachers usually, but keep in mind they spend many a nights with their teams at games and tournaments away from their families in some cases. I think they should receive some extra money in this case. I personally don't have a problem with them making more money as long as they are quality instructors/leaders for our children.

Yeah, it is sad. He makes more than the principal at Southlake.
